What is your favorite birthday cake?

When I was a kid, my favorite cake for my birthday was spice cake and that’s what I always asked my mom to make me.  Morgan wants to make my cake this year (I often/usually bake my own birthday cake) but she insisted it had to be from a box.  I told her I didn’t want a box cake, but she was adamant so I told her I would make a homemade cake mix for her.  This morning she relented and said she would make whatever kind of cake I wanted (she must have felt guilty) so now I’m thinking I’m going to get her to make me a burnt sugar cake.  (Which is a little more difficult than the average cake, but I’ll help her and it will be a good experience for her, LOL.)  Burnt sugar cake is somewhat similar in flavor to spice cake (though not exactly) so I suppose my tastes in favorite birthday cakes hasn’t changed much.

You?

(My kids almost always request chocolate cake on their birthdays.)

Clover made me do it.

Chocolate still gets my vote for a birthday cake.  With either a butter cream or meringue frosting.  Or anything that someone else makes…

I’m the only baker in the family, and I don’t normally bake my own birthday cakes. those are usually purchased by my eager mother from Publix bakery (which, incidentally, makes pretty dang good cakes). But, my favorite birthday cake that I’ve made for someone else (and that I wouldn’t mind having for my own special day) is a devil’s food cake with a vanilla buttercream icing. Good stuff.

My Mom used to make me a German Chocolate cake for my birthday, I just love the frosting!!! coconut,

butter, pecans!! YUM YUM!!!  Saturday the 10th is Sam’s 13th birthday!  he has requested a strawberry cheesecake, so today I thought I would use Suzanne’s cheese cake recipe and modify it a little using strawberry’s and a strawberry jam glaze.  I just love Birthday’s!!! great excuse to BAKE!!!Eating

When I’m telling someone who’s not much of a baker, I say lemon or spice cake.  Homemade is of course the best, but when some people ask like at work (when I suspected the reason they were asking) I said spice or lemon because they could buy box mixes if they wanted to.

A dear friend made me a from scratch lemon cake one time, with lemon curd between the layers (4 layers can you believe it!?!?!)  and with fluffy white frosting.  If I could pick I’d ask for that every time.  I prefer fresh lemony flavors to chocolates, or barring that, something spicy good.

Do we get to choose more than one favorite?  There’s a chocolate cake with an Amaretto buttercream and ganache (Chocolate-Amaretto Tart from MyRecipes.com) that I LOVE, but carrot cake with cream cheese frosting is pretty darn hard to beat!

Chocolate decadence cake.  One dense layer of a chocoholic’s dream.  Butter, chocolate, eggs, teeny bit of flour.  That is my favorite.Eating

Growing up, I had a chocolate layer cake with chocolate frosting made with whipping cream.  Last week – not for any birthday – I made a chocolate cake.  I made chocolate mousse and used that as the filling between the layers and as frosting.  YUM!  I’m going to try a bunch of different flavors and see how that turns out.  (I’m thinking a chocolate cake with root beer frosting made with whipping cream).Hungry

For our birthdays this year (my son and I have birthdays within a couple days of each other), I made a Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Cheesecake Pie.  That’s going to be a tradition now.  (And not just for birthdays, cuz I made one yesterday, adding some Kahlua).  Eating

I always request dirt cake………just because it’s chocolaty with cream cheese and sugar……..and anyone that is asking can make it!

When I was a kid though, I always requested banana cream pie……Mom used to make it homemade from scratch and it was sooooo good!

I’m not sure yet – lol!  I’ve made a root beer cake with root beer frosting.  That frosting was basically an envelope of Dream Whip and enough root beer to make it frosting consistency.

Since I want to make this new root beer frosting with whipping cream, I’m thinking of using a vanilla pudding mix with whipping cream and add some root beer extract.  Gotta experiment, but hopefully all the experiments will be delicious.  (I don’t think I could go wrong with root beer)!

A Chocolate Sour Cream cake with chocolate butter cream frosting.  It is so moist and almost fudgelike, so much so that you bake it in a loaf pan. I like to use Hersey’s Dark Chocolate and it is heaven!

It begs for icecream and coffee… lol.  I am making it Sunday for my Father in Law’s 80th birthday.  My mom cut it out of the newspaper when I was a baby.  It has been our ” family cake” since then.
