Maybe someone can explain……..2 weeks ago I had a sickly RR hen who’s comb was purplish and she couldn’t get up, very poor shape. I seperated her and she died that night. Sunday I had another one who wouldn’t/couldn’t get up, same with the comb and just looked tired and miserable..she also passed. I noticed another part RR hen yesterday, looking alittle over used by the rooster, and said hmmmmmmmmmm..this morning she was dead. Any ideas? I just don’t want it to be a contagious thing that I could have some control over. If this rings a bell with anyone, please let me know.

Have they been on your place since chicks or did they come from another chicken farmer?( he bought some hens one time and in a matter of a couple of few weeks they all got very lazy and died.)

Have they been checked for parasites?

Has it been extremely hot in the coop?

Is the ventilation good?

I don’t know that much about chickens…my son has chickens and he said maybe you should check those things.

Have you called your extension office? Sometimes they can help or at least point you to the right place for good info.

You might want to isolate any that look draggy or droopy.

Sorry to hear you’re losing hens…keep us posted.

Hello again-maybe this flow chart will help you figure out what’s going on:

Well. after I did some figuring, the first hen to die was 5 years old, the second and third were 4. That may have something to do with it. So far everyone else is doing well.  It has been pretty hot…several things possible. My cat is 21, guess chickens don’t live that long:) Thanks for the help

I laughed aloud when I read the last boxes of the flow chart of JL’s posted hyperlink.

“Probably just a Lazy Chicken Breed” was in the far right last box.  Just tickled my funny bone.

My prince charming took a wrong turn, got lost, and is too stubborn to ask for directions.
