Oh yay! I was hoping you’d have another giveaway and I’d have another shot. My hubby saw canning supplies were on sale and mentioned them to me, but without the book they’ll just sit and be unused. I figured I’d try to win one before finally buying one of my own. :) Thanks Suzanne and Alton!! BBB!

Pam basically metal objects should not be used because they can scratch the glass. I use chop sticks to stir the jars.

I wanted to refresh my memory for scalding time so I reached up into my cookbook cupboard to retrieve my old copy of Ball Blue Book and while doing so I thought of you Suzanne, and this project. My copy is falling apart, and the price of 35 cents is printed on the cover. But, it still works just fine, taped together at the seams. A new one would be nice though…BBB!

Wow! what a lot of posts! I’d also like to be in the drawing for a BBB. Forgive my ignorance but do you use this on toast in the morning? I’ve never had tomato butter. I know tomatoes are a fruit but I never thought of making a jam out of them. (Actually if there are any uneaten green tomatoes we always fried them–yummy. Ripe tomatoes were either canned or frozen with basil to have a fresh tomato sauce in the winter.)

Thanks ladies! I have done some canning throughout the years, but never to the extent of my mom or grammie. I guess that’s the reason they always used a wooden spoon even though they never told me there was a reason behind it! I love my wooden ‘paddle, spoon, spatula’ and I use it more than any other kitchen tool.

The Slanted Little House

"It was a cold wintry day when I brought my children to live in rural West Virginia. The farmhouse was one hundred years old, there was already snow on the ground, and the heat was sparse-—as was the insulation. The floors weren’t even, either. My then-twelve-year-old son walked in the door and said, “You’ve brought us to this slanted little house to die." Keep reading our story....
