The Headless Scarecrow

May

So we started planting yesterday (since the moon said it was time) and I got a hankering to make a scarecrow. I always get a hankering to do something else whenever somebody tries to hand me a hoe.

I used garden stakes. Two by fours would work fine, or whatever you have available. You need one about six feet tall and one about four feet long for the crossbar. (I ended up adding a second, shorter, crossbar to keep the legs in position.)

I dug up an old shirt I didn’t care about anymore and slid it onto the top crossbar.

There, he’s gonna look nice, isn’t he?
img_0688img_0688
Well, he needs to pull his pants up.
img_0689img_0689
You’d think he’d be embarrassed to be caught with his pants down like that.

That’s better.

I attached the old jeans with a screw and tied twine around the bottom of each leg….

….and started stuffing his arms, legs, and chest with straw.

I even gave him a little straw kerchief in his pocket. I left some straw poking up out of his collar and nailed a hat to the top of the vertical stake.

This is when I got 52 to add an extra, shorter crossbar, to keep his legs in a jaunty pose.
img_0708img_0708
He looks real jaunty now, doesn’t he?
img_0717img_0717
Except if you look a little closer….
img_0702img_0702
That lazy decision I made to not do something like stuff a pillowcase for his head suddenly seems like maybe the wrong decision because….
img_0718img_0718
….he doesn’t look jaunty at all. He looks like…. The Headless Scarecrow!

I don’t even want to go into the garden anymore. That scarecrow is freaking me out.

I’m telling you, I can’t go in there! Don’t try to make me!

Would you just look at that???

YOU CAN’T EXPECT ME TO HOE NOW!!!

ROFL!! 😆 I must say that is the scariest scarecrow I’ve ever seen. Really, just pictures of it are rather creepy. I doubt I’d be able to go in there and hoe either! 😮

  2. Heidi says:

Hey thats a nice hat!!! How dare they expect you to hoe!!! the shame of it… LOL :hissyfit:

  3. Bee says:

It’s a little creepy, in a jaunty, cute sort of way. And why would the creator of such scarecrow architecture ever be expected to hoe?!

  4. Carol Langille says:

I like him!! Reminds me of one my son and I made for Halloween one year….sat him in the rocker on the front porch and EVERY MORNING, on my way out the door, I would catch that scarecrow out of the corner of my eye and it never failed to scare me! And I made the darn thing….knew he wasn’t a person sitting there waiting on me…and my heart still leaped to my throat.
Maybe this Headless guy will do the same for your crows!

  5. Sue says:

He does indeed look creepy, but to be perfectly honest I reckon a stuffed-pillowcase-head would probably make matters worse!
Hope he keeps the birdies away from your crops!

  6. Treasia says:

I think he turned out rather well. After all he’s supposed to keep the varmints away.

  7. shirley says:

I don’t blame you for avoiding the hoe. You wouldn’t want to be known as the local hoe-er would you? 😆
    (I couldn’t resist)
Please don’t kick me out. I’ll be good. I promise.

  8. Ellen says:

That is one creepy scarecrow. :smilerabbit: Looks like maybe the crows took care of his head already… LOL Loved your post about the hoe. Hope you’ve been able to keep that baby out of your hands! Can’t wait to watch your garden grow…

  9. mmHoney says:

    I HEREBY NAME HIM “JAKE”

  10. monica says:

He could be in the movies–He is scary! Mean rooster may have met his match! :pirate: :devil2: :pirate:

  11. Bev says:

I have often seen tin pie plates hanging from the scarecrows. The birds get used to the “man” standing there and will actually land and sit on it. Although it is a bit freaky and scary.

  12. KentuckyFarmGirl says:

I think you have a mighty fine (and scary) looking scarecrow there!

  13. maryann says:

Hmmmm if you lived near me I would loan you some Halloween eyes to fix in there. LOL yeah it wouldn’t be hard to fix them to some stiff florist wire so they suspend in midair. I need to try and make some with glow in the dark tape or paint so they shine at night instead of using battery operated ones.

  14. Claudia W. says:

Now that’s an excellent scarecrow…especially if he scares you!
    Nice work!

  15. Nancy in Atlanta says:

Darn, Monica beat me to it – I was going to say you could make a movie with that strawman scarecrow!

Wonder what Clover thinks of him? :dancingmonster:

  16. Remudamom says:

I like him. He’s very Tim Burtonesque. I think you should name him Ichabod.

  17. Tori Lennox says:

It’s hard to be truly jaunty, however, when you DON’T HAVE A HEAD!

  18. Estella says:

    He is kinda creepy looking.

  19. Susan says:

The next time someone tries to hand you a hoe you will have to make a head for The Headless Scarecrow! :dancingmonster:

  20. Granny Sue says:

    Yep, that’s creepy.

You’d really like the one that guards my garden. Think plastic skull with a red light inside and deer antlers on its head.

    My husband just ain’t right.

  21. robin says:

i think he is really very fancy! maybe some worn out gloves from
all of that hoeing! attached to the cuffs….

  22. Ken Mueller says:

That’s a pretty nice looking shirt. Head reminds me of Mrs Bates.

  23. Sheryl says:

LOL! You are so funny, Suzanne!
I think he looks cute, head or not! You don’t need to hoe, you cook and write books and do lots of other work. You can’t be expected to do everything! No one can do everything!
I just made a scarecrow too. I bought a vacuum cover at a garage sale and fastened her to a long pitchfork stuck in the ground so I can move her around. You can see her at:
    https://www.artbysheryl.com/scarecrow.jpg
I put one arm up so she looks like she is waving (and not hanging on a cross!)I think I’m going to cut off the visible crosspiece ends. She is stuck in the strawberries right now.

  24. Yvonne says:

You go girl! You have so many talents, but thank the good lord you have 52 to help you with your gardening, fencing, etc.

  25. amy says:

    Awesome scarecrow!! Love it!
