A Girl in Two Shoes

Just so you know…in case you’re fourteen and considering your options…. The worst time to jump off the stairs and break your foot in the country is the winter. Two months of hiking up and down the driveway on snow and ice and mud on crutches is a hard lesson in using all the stairs, one at a time, instead of jumping over six of them to hit a concrete floor.

But the day of joy finally arrived! The nurse brought out her power cast saw to giddy thrills!

And queasy fears!

And steady contemplation.

This is not her first cast. And mayhap will not be her last.

I have two boys and neither one of them have ever broken so much as a pinkie.

My girl, she is something else.

She’s breaking everything, one bone at a time.

She’s quite stoic about it. Proud of her adventurous spirit and uncomplaining in her sometimes challenging, self-inflicted medical consequences. She doesn’t whine. You gotta love that about a girl hiking up and down a snowy driveway on crutches. She’s a wonderful, beautiful, outgoing, and intrepid thing. She’s everything I ever wished I was when I was her age but wasn’t.

She was completely fascinated with her newfound foot after the cast was removed.

Downright infatuated with it. It was examined from every conceivable angle.

This way.

That way.

Wait! She has to get on the phone and post a message on MySpace to tell the world she got her cast off.

Then back to examining the foot.

Taking pictures of the foot with her cell phone.

HUGGING THE DOCTOR when he says she can go to softball practice!

Going home. Wearing two shoes!

Until, you know, she breaks THE OTHER FOOT.

It’s quite the adventure, isn’t it, experiencing a child’s broken bone? Ai yi yi,

glad she has two shoes again!

We know where our grey hair comes from, don’t we?

  2. Nancy in Iowa says:

Mine fractured her ankle when she was 5 – sliding down the windshield of a car when I left her with neighbors! Girls can be just as tumble-ready as boys! I have to say, though, Morgan, the way you are able to contort yourself to examine your foot makes my old knees cry out in pain!!!

You are fortunate to have such a healthy, outgoing and active girl! And look, she even has painted toes in that cast! She can’t be all tomboy with painted toes. There is a little bit of girly under all that sporty, rough exterior.

I think all girls should grow up in the country!

  4. skippymom says:

We have been incredibly lucky – with five kids [3 girls/2 boys] we have been to the emergency room 3 times total [the kids are now 21, 20, 19, 18 and 13]

They were for the following accidents:

    1. Running into a wall at high speed on a bike – concussion/broken nose [13 year old GIRL]
    2. Bowling ball to chin wound – 4 stitches [our 13 year old girl]
    3. Shark bite. Yes, you read that right. Shark bite. 8 stitches [the eldest girl]

So I get the girl thing. Our boys bumped and bruised themselves but never required medical [$$$] treatment and our other girl isn’t a risk taker.

I miss ’em but sometimes it is nice they are growing up and my heart isn’t skipping a beat very often anymore. 🙂

I was also impressed with the painted toenails. Loved the pic of her hugging the doc. Great pics all the way through.

  6. Johanna says:

And she maintained her pedicure! Way to go Morgan!

  7. Mary says:

Love that girl. Thanks for sharing her with the world.

  8. CindyP says:

Yay Morgan!! Off to the next bigger adventure! Ok, maybe you don’t need a snowmobile, Suzanne, for getting around in the winter……I did NOT think of Morgan — she would have toooo much fun jumping hills :bugeyed:

  9. Chic says:

Yeay Morgan!!! Suzanne be glad it was only her foot (which is bad enough when you’re a kid)…my daughter was double bounced on a trampoline when she was 12. She spent 2 months in traction 90 miles away (48 one way trips through the mountains) from June to August then came home in a body cast. It went from under her armpits down to her crotch…then the broken leg was extended and the cast carried on down to her toes. She wore that for 2 months. Then physio pushed too hard and the mend bent and she had a bowed leg for a few months until the following May she had surgery for a rod to be installed. Lesson learned…don’t let kids double bounce on a trampline especially when one is a 6 foot adult and the other is a skinny little girl! She still suffers from that but it hasn’t stopped her from hiking mountains snowboarding or anything else. Kids…they’re tough! :hungry2:

It is wonderful the relastionship you have with your kids. I wish more parents would take the time and be with their kids, listen and enjoy them growing up. Glad Morgan got her cast off. I giggled seeing how she was checking out her foot. lol. Great with the painted toenails too.

  11. KentuckyFarmGirl says:

So glad the cast is off! You got one tough little country gal there!

  12. Joy says:

Do you remember when she was a baby and “discovered” her feet? That was good for several days and then it was onto something else new. That last picture looks like she’s moved on pretty quick!

  13. Wendy says:

It must be quite odd… Having two shoes; one old, worn and dirty; the other pristine and new. Archeologists would have a field day working out the various wonders of it!
    =-)

  14. NorthCountryGirl says:

Morgan, glad you have your cast off! I broke my foot several years ago in the height of summer, like the 4th of July. Spent all summer in a special boot which was very fashionable with all my shorts and summer clothes. Know what it’s like. Glad it’s all over. Take care now!

  15. Kim Gibson says:

My daughter (your right, my son didn’t break anything til he became a Marine at 25) broke her ankle at 13…3 HOURS OF SURGERY AND 2 TITANIUN SCREWS! She has also had broken fingers, toes, wrists, and more. Sigh. So did I . She took after me. My mother threatened this. I only wish she could have seen it!

  16. Angela says:

    Hey Suzanne!

You got to give your girl some credit though. :shimmy: She knows a good looking man when she sees one! :shimmy: I would have hugged him too! :shimmy: Cute and he is a doctor! lol Just saying!

    Angela

  17. claudia w says:

My oldest daughter broke things all the time…Mostly her nose though. I think she did break a bone in her foot once. My middle daughter broke her ankle. The youngest who has the most dangerous job of all three (training horses) has not broken a thing…knock wood!

  18. ScreamingSardine says:

Yay that she got her cast off! Suzanne, your love for your children clearly shines through in your blog, and your words about Morgan in this post was especially touching.

  19. diane says:

Unfortunatly our family knows that group of docs all too well. I recognized the office, not a good sign right there!!! That particular doc is so sweet kind and gentle. A great family man and Christian. Every family needs a bone and joint doc, you have chosen THE BEST EVER!!!!! Or perhaps it was just by luck, but anyway you got the best when it counts, with our precious children. SO GLAD YOU CAN WEAR 2 shoes again Morgan!!!

  20. catslady says:

I’m sure she’s thrilled to have that cast off – does she keep them lol? Luckily my two girls never broke any bones but we had stitches for both and on their faces and a couple concussions for one. She now gets migraines and I just wonder if that has anything to do with it.

  21. Tori Lennox says:

Is she planning a career as a stuntwoman? 8)

  22. kerri says:

Oh happy day! Your lovely photos and words tell a great story.
Good for you, Morgan, now please be careful out there! :sheepjump: Walk sofly :happyflower:

  23. kerri says:

    Softly…that is :help:

  24. Gayle says:

Whoooooooeeeeeeee, I’d hug the dr., too. What a cutie. Oh yes, and VERY happy for her to have the cast off and be up and at ’em again.
    🙂

  25. rileysmom says:

I’m so glad that the road was passable! Morgan surely wouldn’t want to miss her appointment today!

  26. lavenderblue says:

Hooray! :snoopy: Day late on the celebration but I’m glad for Morgan that the cast is off. How come her foot doesn’t look all wrinkly, icky and prune-y the way mine did when my cast came off a way back when? Adorable pictures.

  27. Barbee' says:

It’s been quite a winter, hasn’t it, Suzanne?! Cute, cute post!
