My Porch

I’m working on my porch. I hung up the first thing this weekend. A jar with battery-operated fireflies. Is that cute or what? I love porches. Especially front porches, which in today’s lifestyles often doesn’t fit well in suburban neighborhoods where privacy tends to lead the way in architectural styles. One of the big reasons we chose this house plan was for its huge wraparound porch. I’ve always wanted a wraparound porch.

I wonder what would happen if there were wraparound porches on all the houses in every suburban neighborhood today instead of big back decks? (But I digress….)

So I’m beginning to decorate the porch. Make it homey. Make it mine, not just a porch on some house.

And of course beginning to set out the bird feeders in view from the porch. I’ve been missing my bird feeders.

Then there are the rocking chairs. We bought six ($50/each at Value City, if you’re looking). We put two together a while back and it was time for more. So this weekend, I gathered the children and told them we were going to have a Fun Activity!

Princess studied the directions.

And studied the directions.

I think right after this she threw down the directions. 52 asked if he could help.

Princess: “No! I don’t want any help! Stop towering over me!”

52: “I’m towering?”

Princess: “You’re TALL!”

14 had his own chair.

And 16 had his.

Everybody got their chair put together and Princess, frustrated from the experience, stomped off the porch.

Princess: “I’m going to go upstairs and scream into my pillow now.”

I’m so glad we’re building memories. ๐Ÿ™‚

But look!

Rocking chairs! Five so far, one more to go. When we got all these chairs, I was thinking of those mountain lodges where there’s a huge porch with a great view and rocking chair after rocking chair after rocking chair…..

I want to live in a place where I would want to go on vacation.

And I want it to be homey and mine and full of memories. And so the children put the rocking chairs together and scratched their names on the bottoms. And went to their rooms to scream into their pillows, but let’s forget that part.

And when it was all done and we were sitting at the table after dinner, I discovered this big pile of washers and screws and…. I don’t know what all.

16: I don’t think we needed all that stuff.

Okay, who wants to come over and sit in one of those chairs? They’re just missing a few unnecessary parts, don’t worry.

And while you’re at it, tell me your favorite thing on your porch! I’m making porch plans here. I need ideas!

Oh, boy!!!…just remember – you asked!! My blog is “From the Front Porch” so this is my most favorite thing to talk or write about and from.

My favorite thing about my front porch is actually the quiet and the view and sitting quietly with my pets and listening…

But as to “things” that make it “mine”: I have Adirondak chairs – which I also had to assemble and ALSO had parts left over…so far (4 years) they have not collapsed. And I have little tables on which to set a mug of coffee, tea, cocoa or glass of wine. So the front porch is an outdoor room.

I don’t have feeders as there are bears, raccoons, etc. that LOVE the same stuff the birds do. In the summer I hang baskets of impatiens and fuschia – things that have lots of color and do well in the shade.

I have a beautiful Carruth plaque (I went to high school with Deb Carruth) – the plaque has an angel and a cat and it was a gift from a dear friend. I’m on my way home from that friends’ house and her husband made me a grape vine wreath from their own grape vines – that will go up by the plaque and hopefully I can weave dried wildflowers from my woods into it for color.

Hope you have lots of fun making YOUR front porch YOURS! The birthday swing is gorgeous!

I love your porch and I LOVE your firefly jar. I have been looking for a firefly jar, but he ones I have seen look so cheap. Your looks wonderful and looks fabulous on your porch. Will you tell me where I can get a firefly jar like yours??? email me at: [email protected]
Thanks!!!! Enjoy that wonderful welcoming porch!!

  2. Gabrielle says:

You’re right, every place needs a front porch. I totally want to come and hang out on yours! I don’t have a porch but a balcony with the most amazing view of Paris. I have the requisite window boxes of geraniums, plus a clematis that’s just moments away from blooming, and 2 big cushions for my cats to hang out on. No chairs, because 1 cat will use it as a springboard straight off the balcony ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

  3. Vicki says:

    Hi,

Love your porch. I have a screened porch overlooking the creek that runs through our yard. My favorite thing on the porch, aside from the peace and privacy, is the red glider my husband made. It seats three and is a great place to drink coffee in the early AM. It is also a great place to do the daily crossword in the midafternoon.

  4. Kim A. says:

No porch here. Just the townhouse front step and back step and “yard.”

Love the rocking chairs, hope they hold together. ๐Ÿ˜†

BTW, I have never heard of battery-operate fireflies! They look neat, though.

    -Kim

  5. Kim A. says:

P.S. Really cool looking mushroom! I’ve never seen one like before, don’t think we have that sub-species here. (Can’t say for certain, however.)

    -Kim

  6. Amelia says:

I certainly enjoy the cushion on the glider. It makes for a more comfortable sitting session. Also the small stool that doubles as a table to hold my soft drink.

If you get cushions for the chairs and swing…look for the kind that can be left outside…you don’t want the hassle of bringing them in the house each time it rains. Try to find ones the dogs/cats don’t like (if possible) or you will be sharing your spot with a furry friend. (and the spot my be dirty)

Most of all – just enjoy the beautiful view that is a true gift of God!

  7. Heidi says:

Do those morel’s grow right near your house in the woods? My favorite thing about the front poarch is that you can watch the world go by and not have to participate if ya dont wanna. ๐Ÿ™‚ When I was younger, much younger, my folks had a porch that had a partially screened in area – we had a day bed out there for naps during the hot days or to sleep in at night if the house was to warm….. I really miss that!

Now I have a conffesion – when I first saw the rockers on your pie porch – I thought it looked like a retirement home for bloggers!!!!! :rotfl: Pick your favorite 5 and they will all come to live with you Sue!!!! LOL

    Have a great week!!!

  8. Lauri V says:

I always have big beautiful ferns hanging from my porch. I just love the way they look. Also a great place for the birds to raise a little family which is also fun to watch. Unfortunately, I spend most of my time on the back deck in typical suburbia. Have a great day Suzanne!
    Lauri

  9. Mental P Mama says:

Love those chairs! We have several porches here at our old house, and we love them all at different times of the day. So peaceful. Enjoy–you’ve earned it! :treehugger:

  10. Carol W says:

We don’t have porches, certainly not in my part of Yorkshire (UK). I’m sooooooo envious, it looks fabulous!

  11. Blessed says:

I love my windchimes and my porch swing – those chairs look awesome!

  12. Amber says:

“I want to live in a place where I would want to go on vacation”

    Amen!

  13. Hillbilly2 says:

Love your pie porch! I like the look of ferns hanging on the porch. Unfortunately, I don’t have a big wrap around porch. Want one tho, with rocking chairs!
BTW, we used to call those mushrooms “Haystacks”.

  14. Sarah in Sanford says:

My porch is a covered brick patio attached to the back of the house. We have adirondak chairs and two small tables to set a drink on. My favorite thing on the porch is a large dish filled with water that the birds can come and take a bath in. I have a large window that overlooks the patio so I can watch the birds bathe without scaring them away. Last year a male summer tanager came to visit. He was the most beautiful red bird I have ever seen. The patio is also a nice shady place to sit while I watch my son play. For me, a porch=peace. Sarah

  15. Kathleen in MI says:

I love big porches, and I have never had one. Now I live in a condo with a shared deck. I do have room for a few planters full of flowers.

I adore your porch and I love your birthday swing.

  16. Cyndi Lewis says:

    Flowers! Lots of flowers! :butterfly:

  17. Annie says:

My favorite thing is the porch cat. A large orange semi-feral stray tom that adopted me. He figured out the dog door, so comes in for food, and sometimes lets me pet him. He hangs out on the porch in the summer.

  18. Lora says:

My favorite thing on my porch are two big wicker chairs. We have our morning coffee out there. It’s quiet and the squirrels chase each other around. I also love the creak and slam of the screened door…just part of the sounds of summer.

  19. Gizmo says:

The chairs look awesome, but I think the swing is the best part! ๐Ÿ˜‰ You need a chicken quilt for it, so you can stay late into the evenings (or early morning coffee).

My favorite part of my patio (I don’t have a porch yet) is my windchimes, and the sweet scent from my lavender planted near by.

  20. jenn says:

My favorite thing on my porch are the pots and pots of flowers (well, not yet, but as soon as it warms up). I buy glazed pots in all sizes and colors and plant them with all white flowers, preferably sweet-smelling ones like alyssum and petunias. Ooh, and I also love the new green and blue striped umbrella I got for my wrought iron table and chairs.

  21. Kieran says:

Dear Suzanne, I LOVE your front porch and your story! The pictures of the kids are so cute. I just wanted you to know I still think about you and all the wonderful advice you gave us at LRWA years ago. I’m still not published, but I haven’t been working very hard at it. Now I am trying much harder. My first step is cleaning out my schedule. The biggest thing I’ve done so far is starting today, I am making the kids ride the bus in the afternoons–that saves me an hour and a half in the car, plus gas money! They are all for it. I’m getting my office ready, too. Just looking at your porch makes me wistful for living in the mountains. I am so glad you love your home–sounds like you have all kinds of treasure up there with those kids and that beautiful place…Take care! Hugs, Kieran

  22. Shirley says:

I don’t have a real porch, just a covered stoop. It is however, big enough to have lots of plants during the summer. It gets afternoon sun since it faces west, so I have to find heat tolerant plants. I like to do big pots and have several things growing at once.

And what a neat idea to want to live where you would like to vacation. I’d never thought about that. I just live where I was planted many, many years ago.

  23. sara hardaway says:

WOW – LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!!!! Rocking chairs are good for stress relief too. Make a cup of tea and rock until the sun comes down. i live in a new modern house with no front porch only a back yard one, but i love it too. prefer an old house with an old porch. I have a 2008 calendar called front proches and wow it is wonderful. the chairs are beautiful and say people live here, come up and sit a spell. my friend who lives in the country with horses, dogs, crops, cats has a great front proch with white rockers. it is truly another room in your home.

I went to Ashville NC once to stay in my friend;s house in Little Switzerland, high on a mountain, private road. the house had a large wraparound porch and it was unreal. it also had wraparound large windows too. i sat on it my first night from around 5 until 10, only stopping to make tea. it was in october and 30s there. in the distance i could see the rain coming toward me. awesome. unreal. love NC.

    Enjoy the porch –

  24. Jyl says:

My favorite thing on my front porch is this really old table. It is very small and was once paited white but most of the paint is now gone although you can still see a few traces, the wood is almost a grey color. It might be 2 foot tall and the top might be 18″ X 18″ just a guess, but that is my favorite thing out there. I love old stuff.

  25. kacey says:

We have a front porch and a back deck. The front porch has Adirondack chairs my husband made, and the scent of lavender planted near by. The back deck has more adirondack chairs, some antique metal chairs painted bright colors, a cute bench, and lots of flower boxes.

  26. Mari says:

Those rocking chairs look perfect on your porch!

I have a front porch that i love, mine has a wicker love seat, and two wicker chairs with matching end tables. I have a big old house and the most charming outside thing about it is the porch. A soft tinkling windchime makes it perfect.

    Enjoy your front porch!

  27. Angie says:

You may not get enough sun on your porch, I don’t know. But on my deck, I plant a couple of big containers with cherry tomatoes in them and then set our deck chairs around them. That way we can sit back and have a yummy snack right there next to us.

  28. Robbyn says:

LOL, I’m chuckling over the missing parts!!! What a wonderful homey porch, and I think it’s so neat you had your kids put their names under each of their chairs. My Grandpa used to make us wooden items, and he’d always sign the bottom with his signature in black ink. I have a cradle with his last signature, a gift to us when I had my daughter. A treasure!

  29. Robin G. says:

I don’t have a porch, but I do have a stoop. And my favorite stoop thing to do is drink beer and listen to the baseball game on the radio.

  30. Norma says:

Ours is actually a back porch that everyone enjoys. The neighbors invite us to cookouts and give our porch as the location. lol. I spend many happy hours in our swing with our cat and a good book, but I also love the bird bath that sets near the porch and hummingbird feeder which hangs from the porch. Like yours, ours has a roof over it and we love to set out there and watch it rain, have our morning coffee, enjoy a full moon and visit with friends and neighbors. Enjoy your new porch. Norma

  31. Amy Addison says:

I love my front porch. We have a wonderful view of the Chehalem Mountains to the north (except for the two-story house across the street, but their overgrown tree blocks most of it, so we’re good there). We drink our morning coffee out there. I sit out there to relax. I read while the kids play. We meet a lot of neighbors that way. We’re one of the few models that have a porch that usable (you can put out chairs and a table and still fit a human on there—the porch isn’t just for decoration).

Yes, we have a big back deck, but if I could get the city to move our utility meter six feet toward the street, I’d wrap my front porch around to my back deck.

We also have a flagstone patio between our big porch and our garage, so we have yet another place to hang out in the front and meet people.

  32. Myrna Mackenzie says:

    Suzanne,
I love those chairs, and I know just the look you’re going for. And the pretend fireflies? I so want one of those.

We don’t have an actual porch but a deck that wraps around the side and back of the lake house (which is really more than a block from the lake, but we still call it that because we want to and we’re stubborn. Since we’re not there a lot there’s nothing permanent on it except a big redwood table that the previous owners left and which my husband restained. I’d love to put containers with flowers out there but I haven’t yet figured out a way to keep them watered during the two to three weeks we’re away at a time.

I love sitting out there, though. There are lots of big oaks surrounding the property and it’s a good place to watch the hawks soaring and the squirrels and chipmunks chasing each other and to listen to the woodpeckers that used to feast on our siding (before we resided) but now stick to the trees.

  33. Melissa says:

I don’t have a porch, I have a huge front yard full of scrub oak and deer poop and grass. I WISH I had a porch. If I had a porch, I would have a tea cart/table and every morning or afternoon, I would place my tray of tea and something yummy to eat and have quiet time by either watching the sun come up or go down or both. I would have planters full of herbs for cooking. Some filled with flowers and finches would have made a nest in one of the planters, taking shelter in the leaves and petals of the begonias. I would have hanging baskets of bleeding hearts. Off to one side on the ground next to the porch I would have rose bushes and snowball bushes. I would sit on my porch and listen to the cats purring as they sunned themselves in a beam of light.Oh and I would put up hummingbird feeders and a bug zapper. And being a city girl maybe even some screens. yes, I would have a screened in porch! lol

  34. Linda~ says:

No porch, just a patio and a deck by the pool.

However, I do have memories of my grandma’s porch. I used to lie on a chaise lounge in the evening with my banket and pillow and just listen.

I know what you mean by wanting to live in a place where you would vacation at. Unfortanely, it’s not in the cards for us in the near future. We are going to the Smokey Mountains in six weeks though. Everytime we go, I personally pick out the house we’ll be renting. This one is a huge three story log home made from handcrafted lodge pole pine that was havested from Yellowstone National Park with special permission. Mountain views, fireplaces, a game room and most importantly, a sunken hottub with a panoramic view. AHHHH, I can’t wait.

    Linda~

  35. Tipper says:

Your porch looks great! And who need instructions anyway? My favorite thing on my front porch-the swing.

  36. Elcie says:

Wind Chimes – the wooden ones make the best sounds.

  37. Tori Lennox says:

My favorite thing on our porch is the glider/swing. I love your porch, though I think I’ll pass sitting on the chairs the kids put together. *g*

  38. Shimmy Mom says:

I love the fireflies in the jar! Too cute. I think that is the perfect addition. I have always dreamed of a wrap around porch too. I have flower beds on the railings of my porch and this year I think I’m going to put strawberry plants in them. This way I have something productive with the beautiful flowers (I have kinds that attract butterflies) and room in my garden for more veggies. I also have a huge grapevine wreath, made out of my mother-in-laws grape vines, that I plan to hang on the side of the house and put a nice chair under it so that I’m surrounded by beauty when I go out to enjoy my hot chocolate in the morning sunshine.

  39. Harriet Herrington says:

We had a deck…backyard suburban house…my husband designed and the entire family including grandsons worked over Memorial Day weekend 2004 and turned it into a screened in porch. Love it, love it and my favorite things are: 1) eating on the porch, 2) reading on the porch, 3) watching my birds from the porch, 4) admiring my flowers from the porch .. we love our porch. Harriet

  40. SuzieQ says:

Have planters full of white caladiums..they look so cool when the summer gets hot and muggy..Rocking chairs (also inside near the fireplace) and tables for hot/cold drinks to enjoy while reading, watching wildlife, or just hanging with the dogs..Prefer the fresh air to inside controlled temp all the time..I think this is part of the reason people are so disconnected to neighbors-no one sits outside on porches (most new houses don’t even have them) because it’s too hot/cold/rainy..Get me off my soapbox…

  41. wkf says:

Wind chimes, Sun catchers. Not the anoying windchimes that tinkle, but the big chimes that soundlike church bells. Outrageous colored chimes, suncatchers with lots of color
and refelctive glass. The chimes are actually hung out through the property too.

  42. Granny Sue says:

You’re doing what I did 35 years ago–moved to a place where I’d want to go on vacation. So peaceful here, not a house in sight.

My husband thinks I have a rocker fetish–three in our log room and three or four on the porch. Since I’m into antiques, my porch rockers are the old white woven (not wicker) ones. The tall backs as so comfortable.

Besides the rockers, my favorite thing on my porch is the small old washstand. It’s a great place to stash boots, and the drawer is usually full of tools we need to grab quickly.

Other favorite porch/deck things: the wheat cradle, the big stone crocks, the old cabinet, the little pines in pots, pots of flowers in summer, an old tractor seat, small rustic tables my husband made with tree branches, handwoven rugs and a table for eating outside.

Your porch looks welcoming and homey. I can imagine that any visitors will not want to leave it.

  43. Brandy says:

We just bought a wrought iron set for our front porch. Tables are a good thing! (For setting drinks on.) Um, windchimes are a must. And I have a bird feeder hanging off my porch. I wish our porch was screened in, the mosquitos are plentiful around here in the summer. Hmmm, maybe outdoor ceiling fans to circulate the air? Does it get humid and muggy in WV?

  44. catslady says:

I’m still laughing over Heidi’s remark. AND ALL THOSE MISSING PARTS ๐Ÿ˜ฎ I have a large covered backporch which was nicer before they built new homes up above us. But I really enjoyed it when my girls were small. I’m afraid it’s a cat sanctuary now for all the ferals ๐Ÿ˜†

  45. Estella says:

    Lookin’ good!
My favorite thing on my porch are my hummingbird windchimes.

  46. Deb says:

I LOVE front porches! And yours is nice and WIDE! I have a round wrought-iron table and four chairs on our wraparound porch–right at the corner where it’s the most room. And I’ve given many luncheons (one on one and one on two) right there in that corner.

I love our view, too. Our front porch faces West Virginia and the Allegheny Mountains…who knows, I could be looking over your direction and not even know it! ๐Ÿ™‚

I have a couple of birdhouses and hummingbird feeders on our front porch, wind chimes, lots of hanging plants, and a God Bless American plaque. I collect watering cans and have four sitting on each step going down my porch.

I’m enjoying all your pictures of your new home! Thanks for sharing.

  47. Jill from Missouri says:

I am real jealous of your porch full of rocking chairs but I am extremly jealous of the morel you found. It’s getting close for them here, we have had enough rain we just need the sun and warmth. I can’t wait :hungry:

  48. Susan says:

    Your porch looks fantastic! :bananadance:

We have hanging baskets full of flowers that the hummingbirds love, 5 bird feeders, chimes and rocking chairs.

  49. Cathy says:

    I do’t have a porch where I live now & I really miss it ๐Ÿ˜ฅ
But I grew up with a large front porch & some of my fondest memoies were of me playing Barbie dolls or Itty Bits (little rubber animals) with the neighbor kids on that porch

  50. Kim W says:

“I want to live in a place where I would want to go on vacation. And I want it to be homey and mine and full of memories.” LOVED that! ME TOO!!! I also agree w/what you said about front porches. I recently wrote about “What is Homey?” on my blog. :chicken: :sheep: Hope it interests you: https://www.homesteadblogger.com/wannabeone/93229/ I’d be honored if you (or anyone else here) would read my blog!

I have a quilt hanging by my front door on the porch. I try to change it every month. No room for chairs but there is a tiny antique bench that my granddaughters love to sit on. I live in the Columbia River Gorge of Washington and it is like being on vacation all the time. I  it here!

  53. DeeBee says:

I love your rocking chairs. Its so country-rific! :chicken:

  54. debbie peterson says:

My newest thing on my front porch is a outdoor lamp……….love it love it!!!!!!!Not sure i will love it when the bugs come around…….Looks so cozy from the street coming up to the house.Ferns and geraniums a must….humminging bird feeder……..and in the summer a pitcher of lemonade or sweet tea…..

  55. Maria says:

    I’ll come over!
On my porch….sadly, ticky tacky lawn furniture from last summer. I have a Adirondack that is going up this year though..and some pretty wicker…

I really love the row of rocking chairs on the porch! So beautiful…I like that princess hunkered down with those directions doing it for herself! Way to go!

  56. jan says:

Fireflies in a jar…where can I find them?

  57. Bayou Woman says:

Great post! Love the fireflies! Love the chairs!

  58. anniebb says:

I just want to HAVE a porch. I’ve never lived in a house with a porch (sigh). ๐Ÿ˜ฅ

  59. Becky says:

All you need is love and the rest will fill in as time goes by. I hope you have many many many years of lots of children and grandchildren, lots of friends and a true love to spend as much time with as possible on that beautiful porch. Now go on and make a lot of memories.

I feel that a vacation to your farmhouse would be one of the greatest vacations of all time. I want to come in the hot summer and sit on the porch and swim in the swimming hole with Princess. That is how my summers were spent as a child and occasionally as an adult.

    Wonderful rockers!!

  60. Diane says:

AAAAAAAAGH!! I have a jar of battery operated fireflies just like that!! Aren’t they cute? My favorite thing on my porch is an old galvanized wash tub that I bought a few years ago to use as a planter. Every year I plant flowers or herbs (depending on my mood) in it. I think it would look great on your porch too!

  61. Alicia says:

I’m not even sure how I came across your blog now, but I’m your neighbor across the Ohio. I’m a little farm girl in a little small rural town in SE Ohio. Your posts remind me of me and my family. I look forward to the next day’s!

    -Crazy Cat Lady :purr:

  62. Kathy Russell says:

Thanks for the tip about the rockers! I’ve already Googled the nearest Value City — looks like a trip to visit my relatives on the way to St. Albans is due in the near future. Unfortunately, part of my wrap-around porch was remodeled in the 40’s to add a bathroom to the century-old house. A partial porch, and a bathroom. I miss the porch, but the indoor bathroom does have its advantages over the three-hole outhouse, especially in winter. But now that it’s spring around here…

  63. Big Dog Mom Pam says:

:woof: I love the rockers on the front porch. I have some cheap plastic Adirondack chairs and a little table to hold a drink. My favorite thing is my grapevine tree with lights. The little neighbor girl wants to know why I have a Christmas tree on my front porch all year long. Oh, and I have a cat that adopted me that lives on my front porch. I live in the city and it’s rare to see anyone on their front porch . . . but it’s fun to people watch.

  64. Laurie says:

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE tell me where you got a mason jar of battery operated fireflies!!! I must have some for myself. They are adorable!!!!!

  65. Suzanne McMinn says:

I found a link for where you can get the fireflies! It’s in my sidebar!

  66. Donna says:

How pretty! I LOVE wraparound porches and have seen one or two here, in NICE subdivisions and then alot in the country. I don’t have a porch, but I am thinking of cute things I saw on porches…maybe little tables by the chairs, so people can set thier lemonade down, or thier Kahlua drink down (smile) and their piece of cracker candy, between bites. I also think maybe something by the front door and maybe on either side – small topiary trees, or a cute wooden cat or just a plant…but something. Also, a couple plant stands or little stools with plants on them. Heck even an old church pew. Just thinkiing of things I have seen. I’ll keep thinking…

  67. Lori says:

I grew up in a house with a front porch in a small Mayberry type town and I recall playing with my dog in the morning sun and sitting with my family watching storms roll through. Around Halloween our front porch was transformed into a frightening “haunted house”. My husband and I have decided to add a wrap around porch to our old 2 story farmhouse. We have 3 acres, a pond, a wonderful barn, big trees and evergreens, 3 dogs, 3 horses and a cat with 4 kittens. Add a porch and this will be my home, vacation spot, and a place to sit and listen to the spring peepers – one of my favorite things! Thanks for sharing your beautiful porch with us. I hope ours is as beautiful. I agree with everyone else on those fireflies in the jar. I need some because the real ones don’t stay around long enough. Thanks for sharing your beautiful porch with us
