I was sharing a cup of bootleg wine behind the bushes at the party the other day with Faye when she mentioned she was taking up drinking now that her last grown child had moved out. Not that I don’t distinctly remember sharing a cup of bootleg wine with her behind the bushes at last year’s party. She likes to tell me about the ice-cold creek behind her house that is ice-cold even on the hottest day of the year, and she’s always trying to get me to come out and sit in the creek with her and have a drink.

Not that I ever have time for that, but this is sounding a bit more appealing since she got running water and retired her outhouse. Still, the idea of sitting in a creek drinking wine makes me think we’ll end up taking our clothes off and dancing naked under the full moon or something. Not that anyone would know because she lives on top of a hill surrounded by woods and her husband is legally blind.

Anyway!

School is out. Ross heads off to boot camp soon, and Weston and Morgan are leaving for six weeks in Texas with their dad. I drove approximately 499,317 miles this year to take them to practice after game after practice after game. It’s been a long past year of hard work, on my writing and on my farm, too. I’m ready for a break. And it’s hot. And I’m free. Of course, I still have a lot of responsibilities. All these animals. And writing my website every day. I mean, I’m busy!! But child-free.

WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH THE NEXT SIX WEEKS?!

Work?

Or take up drinking in the creek?

:::thinking thinking:::

SEE YA!!!

  1. Nancy in Iowa says:

I say – drinking in the creek! Without your pants! And wearing Clover’s tiara!! :snoopy:

BTW – I’ve been meaning to ask, how is Beulah Petunia? Any increase in her girth?

  2. Shelly says:

You know what, take a few hours, have a drink by the cold creek and enjoy yourself. You won’t be away from the animals too long and you will have a good time! Invite 52 over for a while on another day and enjoy yourself, just relax on your porch or go for a nighttime drive into the city. ๐Ÿ˜‰ :airkiss: :snuggle:

  3. BuckeyeGirl says:

Hooray for drinking in the creek! You go girl!!! I agree with Nancy too, who needs pants, and taking Clover’s tiara sounds like a real plan. :shimmy:

  4. Rechelle says:

Creek drinking. This is the only viable option.

  5. tabbimama says:

yeah, drinking in the creek. What’s not to like?

  6. thunja says:

do it all!!! you’re young, you’re free, you’re American

  7. Julie says:

Wine by a cool creek sounds tempting. Child-free ~ I’m jealous! Hey, weren’t you just snowed under. How did it get hot so fast!! :sun:

  8. Patty says:

    Oh yeah totally jealous!!!! :sun:

  9. kathy says:

    8) Well, I say why can’t you do alittle of both? The glass of rose wine looks wonderful, and there is nothing like feet dangling in the running creek under the shade of huge trees. So, so relaxing. Enjoy your six weeks. You really do deserve a break from all the driving.

  10. Lisa says:

You actually need to THINK about this??? For more than a half a second?? CREEK! WINE! Can I come too?

  11. leavesofthefall says:

From the looks of that photo, it would appear you’ve been close to drinkin’ in the creek on at least one occasion. lol

Experience is what makes usโ€ฆ go. Do it for the rest of us who don’t have ice-cold creeks or bootleg wine!! Don’t walkโ€ฆ run!

  12. glenda says:

Whatever you want! That’s the beauty of it!

I am betting you are type A and there won’t be too much lolling with a glass of wine in the creek…………….

  13. Linda says:

You could do both on separate days… ๐Ÿ˜‰

  14. Johanna says:

That glass makes quite the enticing photo against that creek! But don’t you have any mosquitoes there? They’d eat you alive around here. Not even the teeniest temptation to get naked outside!!!

  15. Rose in Vermont says:

Oh yeah, you will enjoy that creek, that wine, and the quiet – for the first few days!! Then I predict you will MISS the chaos that is family, which will drive you to new projects, new travels and cleaning nooks and crannies you didn’t know you had. But the animals will keep you company, Beaulah P. chats in the morning!

  16. Barbee' says:

Don’t let the animals know, because they will want to go with you, too! Clover won’t share her tiara, and the dogs will get in the creek, etc. etc. It would just be a mess. :snoopy: “want to go! Want to go! Party! Party!”

  17. Diane says:

Bootleg wine and creek sitting. Sounds like a plan to me :snoopy: I am going to try making wine this summer. ๐Ÿ™‚ I did make dandilion wine. Have not tasted it yet to see how it is.

  18. Karen Patrick says:

Drinking in the creek sounds like a winner to me.

  19. Carmen C. says:

I suggest do a little of both, and enjoy the break;) Of course there’s still the puppy to look after, all the precious farm babies, and the cow to milk…..

  20. Sandy says:

I vote for wine and the breezy side of the front porch. By the way, we will be traveling through your area in mid-July. Are there any really awesome places to shop/eat/sightsee that aren’t in the travel guides? We are spending a few days traveling to parts of WV that we don’t usually see and will be looking for fun things to see and do.

  21. Lori Skoog says:

Enjoy! Six weeks of quiet is unheard of….

  22. Connie says:

Work in the mornings…drink in the creek in the afternoons of course! :sun:

  23. trish says:

I will give you an hour before you miss them and wonder what you will do without them for 6 weeks. Course, I’m one of those strange moms who looked forward to summer vaca.

  24. Nita in South Carolina says:

    What Connie said above. ๐Ÿ™‚

  25. Staci Lynn says:

An ice-cold creek and a bottle of bootleg… sound mighty fine to me. Be careful not to slip on those rocks.

  26. CindyP says:

Oh the interesting posts that could come from drinking in the creek  I’m sure you’re an extra creative person with a little bootleg in ya ๐Ÿ˜† and Faye, she sounds like a very fun woman! Take the time, enjoy it!

Weston and Morgan — have fun!!!!! Make your dad drive you EVERYWHERE and enjoy new friends! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  27. northcountrygirl says:

I agree with Connie. Work in the morning, then have that cold drink after all the chores are done. Better yet, how about taking 52 with you down to your creek; plunk two lawn chairs in the shallows; and enjoy the evening sunset together while cooling your feet in the cold water. How’s that for restful, romantic, and fun?!

  28. kellyb says:

Absolute no brainer: creek drinking. Look at it as doing “Nature” research. Around here we have perfected the art of creek sitting. Get an old, metal lounge chair. Walk out to a carefully selected spot and park your chair. Tie your cooler to the chair and park your buttocks for a spell. My friend and I started this activity about 27 years ago when we couldn’t afford to go to the local pool and needed to cool off. Pretty soon, a bunch of our friends followed and we had a grand time. Enjoy.

  29. Kim Gibson says:

Now THIS is a no brainer! And I like the idea of Clover’s Tiara!

  30. Mary says:

What a photo! Wish I were there.

  31. Diane@Peaceful Acres says:

I got distracted looking at all the icons! :dancingmonster: But if it were me…I’d sit in the creek with some cool wine! Without pants! :snoopy:

  32. Cousin Sheryl says:

I will bring my lawn chair, a six-pack of Coca-cola and wear my bathing suit. I can be the safety officer if you two slip and fall on your heads in the creek!

    8)

  33. cabynfevr says:

Why does it have to be all or nothing??? I say both too! It’s frightening to think how quickly you’ll be posting about the first day of school….

  34. Lola-Dawn says:

:snoopy: I vote creek and wine … but only if I get to come too!

  35. Phyllis says:

What a lovely way to spend an afternoon. You go girl.

  36. Angelina says:

The creek looks so nice and so does the wine!!! Where’s the bottle of DEET? :hissyfit: I want a cold creek to sit in with a glass of sparkling refreshing adult beverage too!! Just bug infested yard here in hot, hot Kansas. Take advantage, think of the kiddo’s, what to do with your time, then drink some wine and you’ll forget about it for an hour or two. Looks so relaxing. Enjoy

  37. Cate says:

Enjoy, enjoy and then enjoy it some more!

  38. lward says:

Come on, you already know the answer to this question. I am with Connie on this, get work done during the day, and head for the creek afterword. Which gives me an idea. I have a creek behind my house…

  39. 52 says:

I have no idea why, because Stringtown is full of “waterholes” (river, creek, ponds), but there are essentially no mosquitoes out there, (Knock on wood with me, will ya ?) :bugeyed:

  40. Shirley Corwin says:

No kids or driving them everywhere!!!! . . . a reason to celebrate! Have a few little glasses of wine but don’t forget your animals need you! And us too! Don’t slip on the slippery stones.

  41. Michele says:

I say dress up the animals and parade them down to the creek with you, take pictures and let us see them!! How exicting is that! Or have some good friends over and make Cadillac Margaritas on the rocks with salt! :dancingmonster:

  42. Miss Becky says:

my advice ~ a little of both. get your work done and then head for the creek and that bootleg wine

  43. Michelle says:

I’d say, take up something that doesn’t kill brain cells….

  44. Kelly Rose says:

Can’t even believe you’d ask such a thing!! Drinking in the creek sounds PERFECT!!!

  45. Lisa says:

I was wondering if you have ever made homemade wine and, if so, can you show us how? I would love to have wine by the creek. I would also love to feed the animals. Love your life!

  46. lavenderblue says:

Going creek hunting! I was cleaning my cupboard today and came across an unopened (how did that happen?) bottle of wine, so that part is taken care of.

  47. Melinda says:

Creek. Wine. Quiet. Is there really any doubt?

  48. Mia says:

oh geeze, now she sounds like my kind of friend ๐Ÿ™‚ and that sounds like a pretty PERFECT way to spend a day. PS.. Folk festival is coming up quick… hope to see ya there, and Georgia too if she goes!

  49. Kacey says:

Drinking in the creek, definitely! No other choice seems reasonable!

  50. yvonne says:

Drinking in the creek….and you’ve got to write about it and take pictures! You really ought to do it!

  51. claudia w says:

Uh…the creek and some bootleg wine would be just the ticket for some of my weeks…it sounds absolutely scrumptous.

  52. monica says:

Sounds great, but I have to recommend some salt in case you get into any leaches. Those guys would ruin your buzz. Have fun: you deserve it!

  53. princessvanessa says:

I concur, go set your tired tush in Faye’s creek and imbibe in bootleg wine. Take Cousin Sheryl as safety monitor.

  54. thunja says:

ahaa! 52 posted. I bet ya got a ton of lighting bugs though. I can see it now. Memories of life on the Pocatalico.

  55. rileysmom says:

I believe that you have chosen wisely! Besides, you’ve earned enough glasses of wine to sit with your feet in the creek every day until the kids come home! Don’t forget some bug spray! Enjoy a glass for me, too! :devil2:

  56. SuzieQ says:

I wish I had a creek nearby…I surely would drink the wine while cooling my feet. :dancingmonster:

  57. Sharon says:

:snoopy: Hey Suzanne, any idea when the next Chickens in the Road Party will be?

  58. KELLY says:

    CHEERS :dancingmonster:

  59. Beth C says:

Oh, for heaven’s sake – Life is TOO SHORT! Take up drinking in the creek ๐Ÿ˜†

  60. Rhea says:

I hope you ended up drinking in the creek some. Delightful.

  61. kathy says:

I’m thinking drinking by the creek with a little naked moonlight dancing!

  62. Geri says:

I don’t drink wine, but this picture sure makes me want to start. Wow, what a nice photo. I also like the one with the wine glass and rooster perched on the banister. Nice Job!
