Homemade Onion Rings

Homemade onion rings

I’ve been making these homemade onion rings for years and everyone loves them. They take just minutes to make and are so much better than frozen onion rings. The three step coating clings well and is super crispy.

I like to save the middle parts of the onion slices for dicing and using in other recipes, but you can coat and fry them too.

The biggest white onions you can find make the best onion rings.

Makes 4 servings

Prep Time: 15 minutes | Cook Time: 5 minutes | Total Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients

Flour Coating

  • 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon seasoned salt

Batter

  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk

Breading

  • 1 cup dry breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper, optional

Onions

  • 2 large white onions, sliced in 1/4 inch rounds

Oil

  • 1 quart vegetable oil

Special Equipment

  • Deep fryer or 2 quart stainless steel pot

  • Directions

    1. In three medium mixing bowls, prepare flour coating, batter, and breading.
    2. Heat oil to 365 degrees.
    3. Line a large baking sheet with foil. Separate onion slices into rings. Working with a few at a time, dip rings in flour coating then batter then breading. Place in a single layer on the baking sheet.
    4. Fry in batches, 2 to 3 minutes per side, until golden. Don't over crowd rings in the fryer. Using a slotted spoon, remove to a wire rack placed over paper towels to drain.
