Quick Easy Hush Puppies

Hush puppies

These hush puppies come together fast, fry fast, and disappear fast! Customize the recipe by adding different seasonings (I like to add cayenne and garlic), include hot or mild diced peppers, and up your game with chopped crab or shrimp or a handful of shredded cheese. They’re perfect just as they are, too!

Prep Time: 5 minutes | Cook Time: 5 minutes | Total Time: 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 beaten egg
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup diced onion, optional
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 quart vegetable oil for frying

Special Equipment

  • Deep fryer or 2 quart stainless steel pot

  • Directions

    1. Heat oil in a deep fryer or 2 quart pot to 375 degrees.
    2. Combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl and mix by hand just until well moistened.
    3. Drop batter by tablespoonfuls into hot oil, working in batches to not over crowd the pot. Fry 3 to 5 minutes until golden and cooked through. Tip: Don't make your puppies too big or they won't cook through to the middle.
    4. Drain on paper towels or a wire rack.
