An Embarrassment of Marshmallows | Chickens in the Road

I read this post by Astrid on Farm Bell Recipes the other day about dehydrating marshmallows. I must have had some kind of compulsive attack, because I don’t even like marshmallows that much but I had to dehydrate some. I had three bags of marshmallows that were getting a bit long in the tooth. I’d been thinking of giving them to the goats and dogs. They love marshmallows. Instead, I dehydrated them. Dehydrated marshmallows are sweet and crunchy. They’re sorta like big sugar cubes. Do I need a two-gallon baggie of giant sugar cubes????? But I have one. At least I know what to do if I need a sugar fix and don’t have anything sweet baked……

Anybody want a giant sugar cube?

I haven’t decided yet if they are gross. They are actually kind of addictive, especially the toasted coconut ones…..

Not to be gross, and I am sure they are very tasty, but the toasted coconut ones sort of remind me of…well, lets just say something you would find in the barn yard LOL.

Ok, I have to ask this ~ what’s with the green marshmallows??? The pink are cute, the off white I get, but seriously GREEN?? I just can’t imagine what flavor those might be ~ alfalfa flavored for the goats??

The toasted coconut marshmallow ones are sooooo good. I love coconut. The Lucky Charms marshmallows are tasty, I think I should try this one. Everyone needs a two gallon bag of ‘em!

Well, after reading, the other day, about dehydrating marshmallows, I had to go and do it! I dumped a bag of mini’s in the dehydrator and yes, they taste like the ones in the cereal. Best part was that I was able to mix them into my dry hot cocoa mix and they look so neat in the jar!

The dehydrated marshmallows are really (strangely) good. They work well for a homemade trail mix, too. Get some dried fruit, mixed nuts, granola, and the dried marshmallows. Instant snack!

You know, I wish I had a dehydrator now too! I make trail mix with marshmallows right out of the bag but they always get so sticky. Dehydrating them would solve that problem!

mmhoney, dehydrated prunes are dried plums….raisins are dried grapes. And grapes dehydrated to raisins at home are soooo sweet and plump. Haven’t tried to do plums yet….

I got a dehydrator for Christmas too! I am going to try this one. We always have marshmallows getting gross. I bet the dehydrated marshmallows would be great in homemade chewy granola bars too. I have some orange peels in the fridge to try and dehydrate, but my book wasn’t that forthcoming on how to dry these. I’m a bit scared to try the orange peels.

every year for christmas I make each of my Kids familys a big jar of hot chocolate mix. Now I can add dried mini marshmallows to it. what a great idea!

Every year at Easter, I grab a handful of “Peeps” and try to air dry them in my kitchen cupboard so that they get all nice and crunchy. They used to air-dry, they don’t anymore. Either there are too many additives in them to keep them “fresh” or our climate up here is getting even more humid. I finally lose patience and toss the things out.

Wonder what my husband would say if I told him I need a dehydrator to dry “Peeps” with. He just gave me two tree taps and a stainless steel bucket for Valentines Day. Yes, I’m going try to tap our maple trees in our yard. The neighbors will surely think I’ve lost it this time.

Jen in VA, I have dried lemon peel in my dehydrator and they don’t seem to have as strong a flavour or scent as when I air dried them. I would assume the orange peels would be the same way.

I’d probably like them dehydrated, I like them when they are a bit stale. The fresh ones taste gross to me. My daughter loves them, she didn’t get that from me!

@lavenderblue- We make s’mores with dried out Peeps – ours usually sit out in the kitchen in the package for a couple months after Easter, and they make GREAT s’mores! The sugar caramelizes when it melts…ooohhh. We make them in the fireplace in the winter too. Yeah, we have kept peeps a long time
