And This Is Why We Are Keeping All of the Kittens

THERE WAS A MOUSE IN THE HOUSE!!!! Buttercup had it then he lost it (what is WRONG with him??) and he was just sitting around as if we were NOT IN A CRISIS. I went out onto the porch and told my cousin there was a mouse in the house. He was across the road playing with his tractor and it was like HE DIDN’T CARE!!!

His mother came over from next door because it was time for the bus to drop the kids off and I told her there was a mouse in the house and she said, “There are probably a lot of things in the farmhouse.” Like that statement was a comfort!!!!

Then the bus came and I warned all the children that there was a mouse in the house and they went inside as if they WEREN’T CONCERNED. I followed them inside to protect them (!!!) and there was the mouse in the middle of the floor!! DEAD!!!! Apparently Buttercup found it again!!! I screamed and screamed and screamed. My oldest son just picked it up by its little hind leg and carried it outside as if it were NOT A VARMINT!!!

I don’t know what is wrong with all the people around here. But I am getting more cats!! Buttercup needs HELP!!!

yes, you MUST keep the kittens. Poor Buttercup doing all the mousing around the house!!

  2. Angie says:

    Suzanne,
Be glad it was a whole mouse. Trudie-kitty likes to proudly present me with mouse parts. :yuck: (and birds and large grasshoppers, and small snakes.)
Such are the joys of rural living. After a while you get used to it!
When we first moved to the sticks, we had field mice in our house (its an old homeplace, too) One night, I heard a noise on our dresser. I nudged the DH awake. He turned on the light and startled Fivel, who was rooting around in the Clinique and Este Lauder. I don’t know who jumped higher….the rodent or me. ๐Ÿ˜ณ That same week, Mr. Kitty came to live with us. We have had at least one cat inside ever since!

  3. mary beth says:

LOL Suzanne! At least the cat didn’t drop the mouse in your bed like you might want to play with it too or something. ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Melissa says:

C’mon Suz! You live in the country. You’re sure to see plenty of varmints. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ
My mother picks off rats with her shotgun. My sis and I call her gun totin’ granny. ๐Ÿ˜†
Butterboo killed it. YAY! He gets his choice of a book from your backist.
OH, and don’t forget to leave out some cheese for the other mice in the house. ๐Ÿ˜†

  5. Madeline says:

We had a country house for 5 years.. field mice were a part of the bargain. I learned to love the little critters! But then, I love and feed everything with 4 legs—-the racoons, the javelina, the mice the strays..

I adopted a family of 11 javelina who came to visit the property every morning at sun up!They will eat ANYTHING and we did not have a grabage disposal.. so it worked out!

Buttercup will eventually get the gist of what his job in the coumtry is!!

    GOOD LUCK TIL THEN!

  6. Marcy says:

We have an old house and a scaredy cat who runs from mice. :hissyfit: So we keep ‘mouse cookies’ behind the cupboards in the kitchen and behind the couch in the other room susceptible to mice. They’re compressed blocks of poison that the mice eat and can take back to their nest.

  7. Fannie M Wiggins says:

I’m betting Buttercup has no previous expierence with mousing, right? Give him time. Sounds as if he’s getting the hang of it though. If I were to get a mouse, my first stop would be the hardware store for a mouse motel or whatever they call those thingies to trap painlessly. If that didn’t work, then I would get rough with said mouse.:fryingpan: They multiply so fast, you can’t let them get a head start on you. Good luck with the training, Suz! Have a great day and hugs to all.

  8. Robyn says:

Oh man, I hate mice. We used to have them in our house in town. DH could sleep through it but I COULD NOT. I have screamed, jumped on chairs, ran to the bed and stayed there for most of the day until dh came home, etc. I HATE MICE!!!! I feel with you. Yeah Buttercup.

  9. Jennifer Yates says:

Before we got cats we had mice…not anymore. We also had a baby possum get in the house too…twice. Not a pleasant experience for my sis who had it crawl across her feet at night and my mom who woke up to it on her nightstand next to her bed.

  10. Angie says:

We have possums visit us all the time!
They get in the trash cans and they eat the cat’s food! One comes up on the front porch and eats out of Trudie’s dish. Talk about a hacked-off feline! Spoodie may be a top notch mouser, but she leaves the possums a real wide berth! :rotfl:

  11. Cynthia says:

Ack! I do NOT like mice! :yuck:

  12. Desperate Writer says:

My cats just look at us like, “Are you going to get that?”

Jack, our Jack Russell, is our mouser. ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. catslady says:

Madeline – you have wild boar????

Now that I have 5 inside cats we no longer get any critters in the house. The ferals take care of everything smaller than them outside the house and the surrounding neighborhood. They used to leave me “goodies” that I had to clean up until I learned that all the other critters that I feed like the possum and raccoons would clean it up for me.

I used to try and save any birds, bunnies and even chipmonks from the cats but learned that I only caused them more pain since they never survived – I had to learn it was the circle of life.

  14. Estella Kissell says:

I also live in the country. I have 8 cats and they are always bring in son=mething and turning it loose. It’s just something I have learned to deal with.

  15. Becki says:

My husband and had I mice in our little house in Lubbock. Only we didn’t know. We had to go out of town for the weekend, and when we came back, we had a pile of dead mice (5 or 6) in the kitchen.

That’s when hubby finally admitted cats were worthy. Never a mouse problem again.

  16. ruby55 says:

Oh, how familiar that sounds. I had a mouse–no, make that mice–problem a few years ago. Actually, I enjoyed watching them. Dummy me, I even watched one get another out of one of those live traps! Astounding how smart it was. It wasn’t until later that I realized: Hey, I’ve got that mouse running around here again.

Well, it took until I moved to find out the full extent of the damage thay had inflicted on books, food, clothes, my book-shelves, etc. So what do I have in the basement here. Mice? I don’t know. But I certainly have RATS. If little mice could do that much damage, how much will the rats do. I haven’t dared to go down and check yet. (coward) I’m sure they’ve damaged some of my books…sob! Well, the mice used one that was lying flat on a shelf as a communal toilet!! Ugh! Phew!

Teaberry is looking at me again so pleadingly. Maybe I should adopt her? I don’t have a site, though.

I haven’t seen any flowers out yet in this concrete jungle. I imagine some must be there already. The weather is certainly nice enough–finally. ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh, and it’s the dead mice I can’t stand to see.

  17. ruby55 says:

Actually, apparently cheese doen’t work well on Canadian mice. Ours definitely prefer peanut butter.

  18. Tori Lennox says:

Don’t let Larissa see all this mouse-icide around here! She’ll have kittens. :rotfl:

Personally, I’m all for getting them out of the house any way possible.

  19. Michelle says:

Hey, at least she got him! Ick, ick, ick!

  20. Toni Anderson says:

LOL–I HATE mice!!! we’ve had the **** all winter!

  21. Crystal* says:

Be happy it was a mouse. The kids turned on the hose today and were cleaning out the pool. I told them to turn the water off. They did. Then some smarta$$ decided to turn it back on. When I yelled AGAIN to turn it off, a LARGE BLACK SNAKE :no::no: slid right next to child’s foot.
Needless to say. The water is STILL on. I’ve called for back-up.
    Grins*

  22. Crystal* says:

Oh. Forgot to tell you. The snake slid right past Toby the Wonder Kitty, too. There must be some sort of agreement in place I’m unaware of.
    *SIGH*

  23. TeresaH says:

It’s nice to start the day with a chuckle and a grin over your mouse escapade:rotfl:

I used to have a dog that was as good as any cat at catching mice

  24. Cousin Sheryl says:

Poor Suzanne! We are trying hard to aclimate her to the country. Actually, she is doing pretty well.

The little kittens will grow up soon and help Buttercup in his mousing duties.

Now, to the reader who had a black snake: The black snake is your friend! The black snake also kills mice and does not harm people.

Oh, I have also warned Suzanne not to put any food scraps out for the dog after dark. That is when the SKUNK comes to eat it. You don’t know how many times I have opened my front door (where the outdoor cat food bowl is) and almost STEPPED on a SKUNK! Not pretty!

We “country cousins” will continue to help Suzanne get oriented to the country.

Happy Easter to all! (Good excuse to eat chocolate!!!!)

  25. Jessica says:

Happy Birthday Suzanne! I just wanted to let you know that my Free Friday book arrived this week, thanks very much! Jessica (England)

  26. Madeline says:

Yes, catslady–11 javelina to be exact.. that one spring it was 9 but then the mama had twins.. they were so tiny, a lot like kittens or puppies. They ARE wild boar, but never acted wild on our property–they snuffled around for their food, sometimes laid down and took a nap! or just looked up at the big picture window to say HI to me.. and went their merry way. I do hear they
are not friendly if, say, a happy tail-wagging DOG would approach them, but we did not have a dog..

I think they are actually vegetqarians.

Mice: we finally found two holes in the wall where they were getting in and sealed it up and they were (mostly) gone.

Ahhh.. life in the ocuntry–we don’t have our mountain house any more and I really miss it..
