Stinky treasure–a mess of ramps.
My cousin, who introduced me to ramps several years ago, picks up a bag of ramps every spring from a roadside stand and brings them to me. It’s my annual gift of ramps. (I’d already cooked up half the ramps before I took this picture.) I’ve been working on growing my own ramps for three years now, and while I still can’t harvest any of my own (I don’t want to disturb them yet–I’m leaving them alone to spread for a few more years), I keep planting more. As I cooked up my latest bag of ramps, I cut off the ends and saved them to plant. One of these days, I’m gonna have a hillside full of ramps!
I’ve got several posts here on how to start growing your own ramps. I’ve got some recipes for ramps here, and you can see a recent post about cooking with ramps on the Farm Bell Recipes blog here.
I love ramps!

You have mentioned ‘ramps’ before. I had never heard of them and found a great link with newbie info.
Having read it, it makes me wonder if eating them offers any bug repellent benefits like eating garlic is said to.
We love garlic and onions and are going to look for some.

I have Trilliums here and NO ramps. If they grow in WV they should grow in Oregon, but I haven’t been able to find any. :hissyfit:
I have really enjoyed your posts and intend to keep searching,,,,, ro maybe I’ll just buy some and grow my own.

I’m suffering from the green-eyed monster here. I love garlic, onions, and leeks, so I bet I’d like ramps, too. I want a chance to find out.
I’m glad to learn that West Virginia appreciates and celebrates her stinky treasure.
