Coffee & Cream Cookies

These cookies are decadent. They taste like suburban streets lined with tidy flower beds. Okay, actually they taste like a mocha latte from Starbucks, but mocha lattes from Starbucks make me think of suburban streets lined with tidy flower beds.

Don’t mind me. I haven’t seen a Starbucks in three years. I don’t really miss the streets lined with flower beds (though I liked them), but sometimes I do miss the lattes. Coffee and cream and chocolate is one of my favorite flavor combinations. So now I eat these cookies and enjoy the wildflowers.

By the way, I wouldn’t give up our wildflower-bordered rocky road for all the tidy streets in America.

I just want the lattes.

Here they are, in a cookie!

How to make Coffee & Cream Cookies:

2 tablespoons instant coffee crystals
3 tablespoons half-and-half (or light cream)
1 cup butter, softened
2/3 cup sugar
2/3 cup brown sugar (packed)
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 cup chopped nuts
1/2 cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips

In a small bowl, dissolve the coffee crystals in one tablespoon of the half-and-half; set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, beat butter on medium speed for 30 seconds. Add sugar, brown sugar, baking soda, and salt.

Beat well; add coffee mixture, egg, and vanilla and beat again. Stir in flour with a spoon.

Divide dough in half. Into one portion, stir in remaining two tablespoons of half-and-half, the cocoa powder, and the nuts. Into the other portion, stir in the mini chocolate chips.

For each cookie, drop one piece from each dough portion onto a (very lightly greased) cookie sheet then push the pairs together.

Bake in a 375-degree oven for 8-10 minutes. Cool on a wire rack. (Let sit for a couple of minutes before removing from the cookie sheet.)

These cookies are fast and easy and ridiculously wonderful. You should be baking them right now!

*Makes approximately 2 1/2 dozen, depending on size of cookies.

  2. B. Ruth says:

Suz’ I’m confused….I always have trouble with this part of your cookie directions…
Could you please explain the part about how you manage to… “Let set a couple of minutes before removing from cookie sheet…or (cool on wire rack”…hmmmm…
PS…I’m usually standing at the oven with a cold glass of milk and a hot potholder in hand….waiting for the timer to go off…
PS…I am sure I would never make the wait on this cookie…I need “hot cookie” patience therapy…..drool…..

  3. CindyP says:

Oh my! I always think you could never come up with a better recipe…. then my computer screen fills with this huge decadent picture early in the morning, and I drool!!! But one of those cookies would taste heavenly with my coffee this morning!

Hmmm, canning or cookies today? Hmmmm….

OMG! Those look so good! My mouth is watering…I think I will make those when I get home from work. (Even though I should NOT be eating anything that decadent!)

  8. monica says:

It is a definite: You are a gifted baker! I have one question though–would these store for holiday gift giving? I usually bake a week or two before Thanksgiving and distribute just after the holiday. It seems to catch people off guard and they get into the Christmas spirit. I have to laugh though–recipe states that it will make 2 1/2 dozen. . .are you kidding me!? I’ll be making a triple batch of these gems!

  9. Mary says:

:hissyfit: Here I sit, in the suburbs, starving!!! Those cookies look delish! Good thing my co-worker is bringing sushi for lunch…that is the only thing keeping me going after seeing those cookies!! I’ll definitely have to make them. YUM! :eating:

  10. Christine says:

So, um, what did I ever do to you that has caused you to develop this diabolical plan to make me fat? Hmmm?

  11. IowaCowgirl says:

Oh these look marvelous dahling, simply marvelous! I too love cream and chocolate and coffee. I too love lattes, but don’t have much access to them…

Maybe after the 12 pounds I am determined to bid adieu to, will I make these beauties!! Thanks!

I realized reading this that the thing I LOVE about your recipes is that I almost always have all the ingredients in the pantry. Nothing too esoteric; nothing that needs a grocery store. I can make these NOW! Thanks.

YUM, I have been wanting some cookies and it makes me want to hop on over to the Starbucks for a decaf coffe or caramel Frapp. – I LOVE The CARAMEL FRAPP.s. It also makes me very thankful that I am NEAR a Starbucks and CAN just hop on over to one, quickly! LOL Though I do like the country roads for a leisurely drive and enjoy the scene, I will keep the tidy flower lined streets, thank you. LOL

  17. Kris says:

I’m getting giddy just reading this. It is rare for me to see a cookie that does not at least resemble one I’ve had before! I just made cookie last night but I guess we’re in for round II tonight! YUM!

Is there a particular type of instant coffee you prefer? Love your blog. I look forward to reading it each day!

  21. The Old Gray Egg says:

Have you tried baking these with goat’s milk? I wonder how to adjust recipes calling for richer cream. As you know, it’s hard to gather much cream from a dairy goat. Besides, the milk doesn’t last long enough around here for good separation. I enjoy reading your posts.

    • Suzanne says:

I haven’t tried these with goat milk, but since goat milk is rich anyway, I’d just go ahead and use it as if it was half-and-half. (It’s not as rich as half-and-half, but it’s richer than regular milk, so I think it would work all right.)

  22. Donna says:

You know, I got to thinking that I made these cookies one time!

  23. Sue says:

I made these cookies today and they are beyond awesome!! Thanks for posting the recipe!!! :shimmy:

  24. Court says:

Just made TWO batches of these! The second one I tweaked a little to my own personal taste. I added about an extra half tablespoon of coffee (it’s amazing how much will dissolve in a small amount of cream), only used 3 tablespoons of coco powder in the dark half, and added more cream and an extra quarter teaspoon of vanilla to the light half (along with about a tablespoon of extra flour to keep the consistencies about the same). I wanted the coffee and chocolate flavor to have about the same strength (my first batch was just SO chocolaty) and I wanted the light side to taste distinctly milky, since visually it looks like it would be the side with the cream in it.

Delicious cookies! like having cookies & coffee and cookies & milk and all at the same time

  25. Adina says:

I made these cookies and they are amazing!!!! the only change I made was that I used one of those scooper thingies to shape the cookies and put a glob of each dough in it and they looked so pretty and marbelized!
