One of my favorite things to do these days is to let the chickens (and ducks) out of the chicken house in the morning. They surge from the house with unparalleled exuberance. It’s a new day! They’re just happy to be alive! They burst into the warm dewy morning, eager to flap their wings and find the day’s adventures.
They make my day, every day, with this, their joyful morning rush upon the world:
Beth says:
I feel the same way about my geese. They LOVE coming out of the barn in the morning. If I let the chickens out before them they start fussing at me! As soon as they waddle out of the barn and into the back yard they do their morning “stretch and run”, flapping their wings as they run across the yard. It is so much fun to watch. 🙂

Loved the video, the cacaphony of sounds were music, I live in the city and perhaps what moved me most was the silence underlying the symphony.

That video was the best – it really made me smile, and Emma (the cat) is sitting on the shelf over my monitor looking a little wide-eyed at the sounds. Your chickens look like a bunch of kids when school lets out for the summer – except for the flying! But, then, they could be Hogwart students!! :chicken: :chicken: :chicken:

Man, oh, man! As a southern California native, how I love West Virginia! The video instantly transports me to my daughter’s farm up in Tyler County. Same GREEN!…the filtered sunlight throught the trees…the scent of damp grass. I can just feel that mild West Virginia humid early morning sun. I love hearing all the animals, and the bugs buzzing away in the background. You people out there are blest! West Virginia is magical. Thanks for posting the video!
Sadly, my kids sold the farm to a natural gas developer 😥 Very profitable – they reserved the mineral rights – but we’ll never get to rock on the enchanted front porch again. And probably no-one else will ever want to, with all the gas wells and the trucks.

I loved the video too. I had no idea a farm was soo noisy. It was really great. Was that Coco barking in the background? It definetly sounded like a big dog barking. The flying cracked me up as well. You sure do have the life. Thank you so much for sharing it with us all.

I can’t believe how noisy it is at your place. I live in the 5th largest city in BC and it is so quiet here compared to your place. Nice sounds, though. Give Clover a hug for me.

They dot just like sheep are supposed too! If they haven’t figured it out yet, the chickens could make some extra money on the side.

Hey Suzanne, Loved your video. My “girls” can’t be let out as we live inside the city limits, but I move their pen every day or three, so they have fresh grass. I gathered my first egg the other day. My sister gifted me 7 hens and a rooster this summer. The grandkids are enjoying them so much. We have a chair near the pen so we can watch them. I also made Grandmother bread in the bread machine last nite. I don’t think I will be sharing very much of it,LOL. Take care and have a great day,
Terry

How many chickens do you have now?
Since your oldest graduated, does that mean you have to take both kids to school?
My house cat has taken to going on the back porch with me early in the am. While she was minding her own business taking a morning nap in the sun, a mocking bird swooped down and attacked HER. The bird is fine, our cat has a bird-beak puncture on her neck. Ugly.

Wow, your poor cat!
I think we have about 50 chickens now. Yes, I have to drive the kids around this school year–they take the bus in the mornings but I have to pick them up from practices.

Chickens are such interesting little things! I sure miss having a few to care for. A friend of ours had a neighbor that had several dozen chickens. Every afternoon, when he would go out to feed the chickens, he would go into his small barn and the chickens would run around the barn until he came out. They never went into the barn, just ran around and around. It was always so fun to watch!
I enjoy your posts!

Becki, I think you cat was lucky that is all that happened, poor baby. Last summer I was hanging out on the padio with my dog and cat when a hawk swooped down aiming for my cat. She made a dash to hide behind some pallets that we had up against the garage. Meanwhile the hawk landed in the nearest tree and watched her intently while he planned his supper. I grabbed her and did my best to cover her and put her back out side. I haven’t alowed her outside since.
I just Love the symphony of county sounds. Just wonderful.
