We had a long, slow, tender snowfall yesterday.
It began in the night, softly blanketing the hills and trees while we slept. It carried on throughout the day.
Chickens fled, fearful of harsh Winter.
Sometimes, oh yes, sometimes She can be quite cruel.
But this was a gentle snow.
Almost demure.
Even a bit remorseful. Trying to make up.
It was a Saturday. No school, no activities, no driving on scary roads.
And it was as if Winter knew….
….that She was welcome…..
….on the weekend.

We got it too neighbor and you are right about it. It is a light fluffy sort – just hoping the temps rise so it doesn’t all ice up.

I myself do not welcome one point four degrees above zero of cold on my thermometer this morning. That is not demure; no that is dang cold out here this morning on the Mountain. One of the Intelligentsia stated in the local newspaper that all of us who believe weather is cyclical, and that their global warming theory is bad science, makes us ignorant hillbillies. Maybe I am just less gullible than they think I should be. Go away winter! Burrrr

Yes, those calm snows are peaceful, especially when the ground is bare. Makes for some beautiful shots, too!
Up here, when you’ve still got a couple feet of snow, it’s just one of those “Again?” And the brutal cold just makes me want to stay in the house with all the drapes drawn and candles lit! :sun:

🙂 Your snow is pretty. We got some to Fri and its still hangin around. But your right it is more peaceful when it comes on the wkend. I looked out my window yesterday and saw my lil grandbaby in her red parka. Her dad took a big shovel and made a sm hill for her to sled down on her little blue sled! Just melted my heart…..Plus I noticed the snow had been cleaned off my car! 🙂

I know that the one’s living in the north are sooo tired of snow and cold. But I would truly love to see a snow covered field, or snow on the trees like ya’ll have. Our winter was way colder than normal but we got no snow. Perhaps a few flakes fell but none stuck to the ground it melted before it hit. Our ground does not freeze so it will not stick.
Your snow is very lovely, cold….but beautiful.

I love snowfalls like that and sometimes I miss them. We had bare ground up until this Thursday and Friday when we got dumped on but it was so bright and cheerful with all that white stuff on the ground. I guess we better enjoy it here today because it looks like we’ve got warming temperatures heading our way and freezing drizzle tomorrow…yuck. Enjoy your snow while you can!

Yes, living where there’s lots of snow does get a bit tiresome, but it is what it is. If we would get snow in moderate amounts that the road crews can keep up with, it’s nice when it lays a gentle blanket over the landscape.
Too bad mother nature has such a wicked sense of humor most of the time!

…so… When are you going to start blowing the “innards” out and making Easter Eggs? They’d be so pretty!
Especially if you do them the old fashioned way… I think they’re called Matroiska eggs? Or something like that. You put wax designs on, dye them (the wax acts as a “resist”)starting with the lightest color, repeat but using the next-lightest color, etc, and at the end, you take off the wax and have bee-you-ti-ful, decorated eggs!

Northern Pennsylvania and the ground is bare. The chickens are out in the yard…one is sitting on the ground absorbing sunlight. Squirrels abound and the little birds are singing. It will soon be Spring and I can’t wait. Time to order seeds and plan gardens.

What a beautiful blog – pictures and prose. I just wish it was a little bit warmer. Single digit nights are too cold for my outside ferals. My older one didn’t make it even though I have tons of places for them to sleep under a covered porch. I’ll be happy when it gets at least in the 30’s!!!

We’ve had a LOT of snow this winter, but for the past two days the sun has been out. I even fell asleep curled up in my rocker with the sun shining on me yesterday. I’ve been having dreams that all the snow is melted, and it’s time to start planing the tomatoes and peppers. SPRING IS COMING! But your gentle snow was sure pretty!

We too had a gentle snow here in Tennessee, unfortunately it started at noon on Friday! But what a nice quiet weekend it has been – baking, making candles and meals from scratch. Thanks Suzanne for all the encouragement to “put away” for winter – it makes it easier to appreciate the snow when it does come down.

Yall might have gotten a gentle snow but further south (Virginia Beach, VA) we, who rarely get any snow at all got slammed by 8 inches of snow! The whole area has been shut down and probably will stay that way for several more days. I haven’t seen this much snow since the storm of ’81
I feel bad cos we had a lot of stuff blooming, the fruit trees had flowers, the hyacinths had bloomed, all that is frozen now.

I was so excited when I read about the bread bags with twist ties in your newsletter that I raced to Walmart. I couldn’t believe how many different bags they had in the Great Value brand but all with zippers. They had nothing like the ones you showed. If you think of it next time you’re in Walmart ask them to send some up to the upper peninsula of Michigan. 🙂 They sound like just the thing.
