And here I thought the chickens were being so cooperative! I thought it was safe to go back to the nesting boxes! I thought we had an understanding.
This is not acceptable, chickens!

Awww…you might want to have a long discussion with said chicken! She needs to know that her eggs are NOT garbage. Maybe she has a self image issue? 😆
I love :sheepjump: that you now post more than once a day!!!

I don’t know if you can, Suzanne, but you may want to try and enclose your nesting boxes on 3 sides, leaving the fronts open, so that the chickens feel safe in there when they lay. It may help them to continue to lay in the boxes you have for them. Just my $0.02. I, too, am glad you are posting more than once a day. Take care, from KY.

Chickens are so dag-gone cute, I love watching them and they definately have minds of their own as to where they want to lay their eggs. I currently have 6 chickens and 3 laying boxes. Would you know ALL 6 chickens lay in the one (same) box every day! They must wait in line to lay! LOL Thankyou, Suzanne for sharing your wonderful, funny, inciteful stories. They are always there when I need a giggle.

Mine are being just as uncooperative! But at least my girls don’t have self-image issues and throw theirs away! LOL!

Excuse me, chicken, did that LOOK like a good place to lay eggs? It can’t have been comfortable, even.
Maybe it was the chicken whose egg the dog got. “Before I let that dog have another egg of mine, I’ll lay them in the trash!” Or someone who is so NOT broody that she never wants to sit on another egg again.

I wonder about those open nest boxes especially out in the open sunlight under the porch…..
I know, I know, there is always a freaky little hen that will lay her daily egg on the floor of the hen house as if to show the others that she can…but usually they prefer an enclosed box..in a darkened area…like a deep trash can…LOL

:snuggle: That’s the bad part of feeling sorry for them after the garden season is over, by letting them run free range. They are apt to lay just anywhere. We have been letting ours out some each day, and they are reeking havoc with my flower beds. I took pity on them one day and simply dumped a large scoop or two of decomposed mulch into their pen, just so they wouldn’t be so bored and possible find a few tasty morsels along the way.I hate this time of the year for them, when their pen is scratched to death and dried tee totally up.I’d love to have a pen I could rotate them to.

Have you looked into chicken tractors? It lets you rotate where they graze, but still lets you control their environment a bit. Just Google “chicken tractors”.

At least yours are laying – if mostly in bizarre places. I’ve only got 2 out of 13 chickens “operational” at the moment. Humpf! 😉

We had chickens for 15 years at our home in Miami Gardens, FL, and they always found weird places to lay other than their nests. Once we found a bunch of eggs inside the engine compartment of an old racecar we had in the back yard. Speedy chickens?
