It’s August now, and I’m aware of the passage of time. BP’s time is coming. She is enjoying her summer of green grass on the big upper pastures, but she will not be suffered another winter. Before the time comes, she will be moved in to the back barn yard for a few weeks. She has lived her life, before me, as a professional dairy cow. She will end her days with the one baby with whom she ever got to bond and keep, Glory Bee.
I’m a sentimental fool for a farmer, but this is how the cow who taught me everything I know about milking is going to leave this world.

Oh Suzanne…. she is a good cow, and you are good farmer and caretaker of your animals. You are doing what is best for BP;
sad and difficult a decision it is, and my heart goes out to you all.

You’ve really shown her what love is, She couldn’t have asked for a better home to live out her last days in. You will let us know, when ‘it’ happens wont you? So we can all say goodbye? *hugs* She is a gorgeous cow and very very lucky to have you. She looks so happy and thankful, and I know she would appreciate you doing that one last kindness of saving her from another tough, painful winter.

You’re not alone in sentimental farmer department, Suzanne. The farmer up the road from our cabin kept a team of horses because…he liked ’em. He had a rabbit in the barn because…he liked it. When I went to veterinary technician school, one of our labs was at a small family dairy farm. The elderly woman who owned the farm had named all the cows–their names were on plaques above their stalls. The farmer pointed out a cow that she told us was 28 years old and retired. “She was such a good cow for so many years, I just can’t put her down.” I can’t imagine NOT getting attached to any animals you live with. BP has been a good cow. She’s earned a pleasant retirement and a peaceful departure from this vale of tears.

What’s happened to BP? Why has her time come and where is she leaving this world? Is she sick?

I just cannot imagine your grief, facing those decisions I know in my future as well. The joy and love animals give to us is indescribable and as caretakers we also know the heartache of their passing. :heart:

I have windchimes on my front porch with an inscription that says
“May gentle winds lift and guide new wings as this pure sound ushers them home to Rainbow Bridge”.
I will glady ring the chimes when it is BP’s time. A well deserved rest awaits her in always green pastures. :moo:

:hug: I have been wondering about BP for some time now, but didn’t have the heart to ask you and maybe hear something I “didn’t want to know”. What a precious gift you have given one another. :airkiss:
