I’ve gotten most of my canning jars either for free from the attic of someone eager to be rid of them or from the classifieds. You can buy them cheap from the penny papers. Sometimes they come with stuff still in them, which is kinda gross because it’s always old stuff, but cleaning them out is worth the bargain. You never know what you’re going to find when you open a box of old jars. These are a couple of my favorites because they’re so unusual. One is a Ball jar and the other says Eagle Mason. Both of these jars are in odd sizes you don’t see around today–they hold three cups, so they are the halfway size between a pint jar and a quart jar. The Ball jar fits a wide-mouth lid, and the Eagle Mason looks like it should fit a regular-mouth–but doesn’t. (The regular mouth lid is too big.) I’m always hoping I’ll come across a lid that fits it, but I doubt I’d can anything in it anyway. (I’ve rarely had a jar break in the canner, but I wouldn’t risk it with these.) I love my odd jars!

I love those old jars. I got a great deal on craisglist from someone cleaning out her mother’s storage sheds. There were several interesting old jars in there. I use just use them for pretty I don’t want to break them in the canner.

If you like the odd size jars, I buy spaghetti sauce from time to time, and it’s just about between a pint and a quart. The brand is Classico. The labels also come off easily when soaked. I know some folks won’t use jars that food comes in, but these are Mason jars. I’ve used them for a good while now, no problems. Perfect for green beans when a pint is too small and a qt. is too large. Regular lids and bands fit just fine.

The jar on the left is likely a Ball 22 ounce freezer jar. I love those jars! I have a coworker who would often bring soup, etc. for her lunch in those jars. It’s one jar I haven’t had the luck to come across and they go on ebay for $5 to $12 each. And I agree about the other jar taking a #63 lid. Last I knew the lids are still showing up on ebay and it would be worth scoring one box so you can use the jar for pretty storage.

My mother and I went into the cellar of my husband’s grandmother’s house next door, and found all kinds (hundreds) of old canning jars. A lot of the blue Ball jars, several in half-gallon sizes, and some with that really tall thread section for the lid like youve got there. We only took the empties, that was last year. Now the house is falling down so I feel obligated to go back in the scary, spidery, damp cellar and get the “fulls” (full of what god-only-knows) to save all these wonderful old jars from a pitiful demise. I love any & all odd bottles, jars etc. The property behind our house had a house on it at one time. Back then, a hole was dug and their trash was put in it…kinda like your own personal landfill..I have found old perfume bottles, glass doll baby bottles, medicine bottles, canning jars, milk bottles etc. Suzanne, do you have a #13 canning jar? supposedly they were not used when canning due to bad luck.. Oh, me me me…I would love to fill my jars with stuff that’s in the BBB….I have some that are old that I got super cheap and some that I bought new in the store when I first started canning. I bought them becuase I wasn’t sure about this and they were a good price. But the used ones are better. I was so sad to find out that a friend of mine’s mom passed up a pallet of them at $1 per box (dozen) at a sale a couple weeks ago – she thought she needed to call me and find out if I wanted them. I explained to her that she never needed to call me with a question like that. Yes, I wanted them. Of course when she went back they were all gone.

I too, have several favorite old jars I don’t use in the canner anymore. One special one is a ‘mom’s mason’ with a raised picture of a little old lady with her hair in a bun on it, I don’t think it’s old but I like it a lot. A few other older ones are ‘Brockway’ & ‘Presto’ & ‘Victory’ with awful big round bottoms on them. I can’t imagine having a canner full of them, as 7 of them would never fit in it. I tend to only use one’s for canning that I wouldn’t care if it broke. I also have quite a few Atlas 1/2 pint’s that Classico was selling pesto sauce in for several years, I LOVE them for jams & jellies. A year or so ago, as many companies did, Classico changed the size of their product’s container. They still sell the pesto in an Atlas jar, but it’s a smaller & odd sized one & not one that a canning jar lid will fit.
I haven’t bought any new jars in a long time, but am always bringing home a few I find at the thrift shop.
I don’t need a BBB, I won a few weeks back & just got it the other day and am enjoying reading it, it’s differant or more updated than the one I have been using for many years…Thanks

Gosh old glass can be interesting! If you don’t find a lid for the Eagle Mason jar so you can store beans, popcorn or lentils in it, you can always use it as really cool vase. I purchased a dozen of those Ball 1-1/2 pint jars at Walmart in Charlotte, NC around 1995 or ’96 because they (their size) looked so “useful”. I do use them every day in various ways (dry storage, refrigerator storage, in my lunchbox, drinking glasses, etc.) and have tried to find more to purchase but was told by one vendor who had never seen them that they were probably a special product that Ball made for a limited period of time. My jar has a freezing fill line at the top so they probably were made for freezing.

What a perfect post to read today-I had stored in my Son out building several boxes of canning jars, most of which I had never looked at–my Husband at the time brought them home from a farm auction and they were old then–that was neary 40 years ago. I asked my Son if he would move the boxes to his basement and I would look at them soon–today was the day-there were 21 boxes of jars! Most of them blue and every size you can want-some with glass lids and bails, some with zinc lids–I was amazed!. I brought several boxes home and will start cleaning them tomorrow. I am not a canner anymore but will fill them with dry goods and spices and put them in one of my old cupboards in the kitchen. It is like Christmas morning!

Funny story about old blue canning jars. We lived in an apt behind a former Barber Shop on Main St. The floor was cement, and it had a basement. Inside the basement was a “canning room” filled with shelves and on several shelves old blue canning jars full of brown stuff! We were renters and the owner of the building said, “take any or all of those disgusting canning jars out of there that you want!” So, I proceeded to clean out that canning room. Most of the “brown stuff” inside was stain as the food had evaporated, except for two very tall (a quart and a half) jars with glass lids and bail type closures. The contents were gray. When I opened the jars, outside in the back (which was an alley) the bar patrons down the alley could smell that 50 yr old sauerkraut! Whew, haven’t been able to smell cabbage cooking or sauerkraut since without remembering those jars. Still have the jars, 25 years later (they no longer smell!)

Oh shoot. I missed the cut off time for the BBB by 9 minutes! But I have to tell you about a great old Mason jar that I inherited from my MIL…..it has “Mom’s Mason Jar” across the front with a picture of a woman in glasses with her hair up in a bun peeling potatoes. It’s beautiful and I’ve never seen one like it before!

hey Suzanne…I just made a discovery & thought of you right away…I too have several of those odd size jars & am always on the lookout for a lid to fit them. I have a few of the small old size 63 lids, but no bands…so that doesn’t work. I was just rinsing out a Ragu spaghetti sauce jar to recycle it & was about to toss the lid and noticed that it has a loose center in it, like a seperate lid. I tried it on one of my odd jars & IT FITS!!! My odd jars are all little 1/2 pint ones that I will be using for sugar, salt, coffee…things that I need a spoonfull of frequently but don’t need to get out the big jar of it. At first I thought I might paint or cover the centers of the lids with something, but I’m thinking now that I could just push out the centers & use the real canning jar lids in them & the Ragu yellow plastic band.
Gosh, now we gotta hurry & eat lots of Ragu sauce before the manufacturer changes their design.
It made my morning!!! 😀
