Name That Doeling AND Buckling!

Jul
15

You guys are great! You came up with so many fabulous combinations of names, my head is spinning in an attempt to decide. What I have here is a one-time situation. I will not again, ever, get a boy and girl, siblings, so this is a singular opportunity to name a pair. Raising dairy goats means you don’t need a whole passle of boys. You need a buck and a wether (neutered male). A buck must be kept in a separate pen from the girls, but goats are social creatures. He’ll need a companion to belly up to the bar with as he drowns his sorrows during the many, many long days and nights between dates with the girls. That’s the job of the wether, the non-threatening companion goat. Our wether will live with the girls for now, but next year when we get our buck pen built and get a buck, he’ll move in there.

Neutered as a baby, our wether will never develop the shaggy mane and beard, or the bulk, of a buck. He’ll look, in fact, much like a large female. I think he’s contemplating this upcoming, longterm indignity in this photo:

Yesterday’s poll wasn’t working until afternoon due to a technical glitch. I was going to carry over the poll to today’s post, but really the babies need to be named in a pairing and you all came up with so many cool ideas! Just pairing up the names was hard enough. I can’t possibly make a final decision. I CAN’T. And since you can only vote once, moving over the poll wouldn’t allow for possible swayed decisions based on the pairings. So, based on your suggestions, using the original five doeling names, here are the pairings in a new, final poll:

(Doeling name listed first, wether second.)

Nutmeg and Honey
Nut ‘n Honey! Cute! The very popular Nutmeg choice paired with the Clover connection (clover honey). And the wether will be my “sweet boy” since he’ll be neutered.

Clarabelle and Clarence
As one commenter noted, yelling CLARABELLE when I’m irritated could be quite fulfilling. Like if she’s annoying me when I’m trying to milk her. Plus there’s something so adorable about naming animals people names.

Penny and Copper
Copper Penny! And it’s cute, but not too cute, as one commenter said. Just the right amount of cute. Plus it makes me feel like I’m in the Disney movie, The Fox and the Hound.

Taffy and Buddy
A cute candy girl name paired with a moniker fitting of my wether’s lot in life. And fun!

Cookie and Clyde
Like Clarabelle and Clarence, these names go with the “geneological” idea of naming the babies with the same first letter as the mother. Plus there’s a sort of Bonnie-and-Clyde-with-alliteration feel to it.

Trouble is, I love them all. I can’t choose! So that’s your job!

Cute choices! Already voted for my favorite. I don’t think Coco seems too concerned about what their new names will be.

I’m not crazy about Honey as a name for a boy (even a neutered boy *g*), so I voted for Copper & Penny which is cute. :)

Looks like Copper and Penny are losing out to Nutmeg and Honey – but no telling how many votes have been tallied. Maybe there is still a chance for my pick. After all the polls just opened, and only a small percentage of polling places have been sampled. I love it that Copper and Penny both reflect their coloring. Plus, they sound different enough that they can learn to recognize their names, and they are short enough to yell at the top of your lungs when you need to call to them.

I didn’t vote this time round, because the pair up I like isn’t a choice – Nutmeg and Copper.

just an fyi, I’m getting an awful lot of pop ups on your site today. :-P

Love the pick of the kids playing in the river FULLY CLOTHED. I have a picture of my boys in the ocean….in sweats (because, you know, it was NOVEMBER)! I’ll have to post it one of these days….

I like Nutmeg and Honey, but I think Nutmeg sounds more like a buckling and Honey the doeling. So, I voted for my second choice: Penny and Copper. I like Cookie and Clyde too for the fun alliteration, but I thought Cookie was a little too close to Coco. That’s just my 2 cents!

I love Nutmeg but otherwise I don’t like any of the name pairs… so I am not going to vote.

I do look forward to seeing what you decide however!

I voted for Penny & Copper…but if Nut n Honey got the nod it wouldn’t break my voting heart. I liked that alot, too. Have fun w/the results!

P.S. I just wanted to add that I don’t think you can go wrong with any of the name pairs. I think that they’re all cute! I was just trying to give my rationale for choosing Penny and Copper over some of the other choices.

Those babies are adorable and I love the Nut and Honey reference so I voted for Nutmeg and Honey.

Yikes, what a tough choice! All of the names are great. That is a terrific pic of Princess and her friends! Coco looks very underwhelmed about the soon to be new arrivals.

I like Clarabelle and Buddy, sorry to be difficult. I like them for the reasons that you stated for each one.

I liked Cookie and Clyde, it gave them a small link to their Mom. Also Honey seems too much like a girlie name for me, sorry.

OK – the goats are absolutely precious and cute BUT – Coco is mine! I’m in love with the puppy! We live in the city, with a pool that is entire backyard, but I NEED a Coco! (Do you think I could rent her?)

Nutmeg & Honey make me hungry. I wouldn’t Princess to get too hungry when she milks the goats… so I voted for Penny & Copper. These goats are too special to be eaten, except for the goat milk.

I discussed this with all living in my house and now there is an additional 13 votes for Nutmeg and Honey. Just so you know I am not cheating the votes are from, Hubby, Lane and her 6 puppies to be born next week (chi and yes I asked the pups to kick at the name they wanted), Bean (chi), Timber (beagle), Gerda(german shepherd dog), Brina (plott hound, and Joey (old man cat). So I hope this settles this for you.

The Slanted Little House

"It was a cold wintry day when I brought my children to live in rural West Virginia. The farmhouse was one hundred years old, there was already snow on the ground, and the heat was sparse-—as was the insulation. The floors weren’t even, either. My then-twelve-year-old son walked in the door and said, “You’ve brought us to this slanted little house to die." Keep reading our story....
