Scraping My Way Out | Chickens in the Road

The internet went out yesterday afternoon after rain turned to snow that lasted all day. Today, I hiked out to the dish and scraped my way back to civilization with a stick. The satellite dish was covered in snow, but the real problem was underneath the snow where I found a thick layer of ice. Took me forever to scrape it off with a stick, but I’m back!

At least for now. It’s that time of year. With this snow on top of ice, trees could start falling then the power will go out. Hopefully not–but, it’s possible. I’ll post as I can. I have some cute new pictures and video coming of the babies!

Spray the dish with non-stick spray – will help keep the ice off or to a minimum

The weather has been so wild this year, and with your location, you’re forced to have a satellite. I think the long ice scraper with a brush sounds like a great idea!

By the way, do you have a post on how you made the decision to have cows and goats and whether you felt you could handle the country life?

So how do you like Hughesnet? I find the download limits very frustrating……how do you manage it with your website? I also have to go out and scrape ice and snow off my dish.

They should sell satellite dishes with automatic de-icers, like the stock water troughs! Good to have you back. Time for a Morgan-sized mug of hot chocolate.

Ah, the modern technological life. You’d think they would come up with a solution to that. Like running a heat cable through it or something.

We have HughesNet also – and suffer the same problems. I hate the download limits. A heated dish – now that’s an idea! They have heated mirrors on semi’s – why not a heated dish? We’ll be here when you get back!

Hey Suzanne!

I had to do the same thing yesterday! I was loosing all of my technology! No internet no satellite. What’s a girl to do! It’s an icy mess where I live. Ice is the worst! Although we had a nighttime temperature of 27 below zero on Sunday, and I wasn’t so keen on that, either. Do you have a generator in case the power goes out and stays out?

Welcome back, however brief your stay may be! I’m 5’10″ in my bare feet. With my boots just about 6′….the snow is uo to my hips! In Connecticut! Crazy, crazy winter!

Down in Flat Top, or should I say atop of Flat Top….we lost power around 10 pm last night. Had to sweet talk DH into cranking up the generator so I could finish printing mailing labels and invoices. He did, I did, then we shut her down and went to sleep in the dark! Still out this am, and still out now. But the snow covered trees against a blue sky are priceless. Yeehaw!

Ice/Snow on dish – I hooked up a water hose and sprayed water on mine. Not the most pleasant way, but since ours in too high to reach. Just watch out for back-splash.

How ’bout a mist of WD40? We spray it on our garage door so the alley splash doesn’t freeze on the door/freeze the door shut.

Hopefully you don’t lose any of those wonderful trees to the ice/snow. Losing internet is bad enough!
