A Little Golden Book Story

Our newly-built chicken house has been christened with its first eggs!!

Okay, okay, they’re not chicken eggs.

We have a bird’s nest in one of the nesting boxes in our chicken house. I was careful not to touch the nest at all as I admired it.

Anyone read the children’s book Are You My Mother? I can see these little baby birds hatching out, tumbling out of the nesting box, and wandering around the chicken house saying, “Are you my mother? Are you my mother?” to every chicken.

Until one says, “Yes, I am. Come here, my pretty.”

“Now you die.”

I read that book! I also read it to my niece when she was young. I think you need to sit Spartacus down and have a nice long chat about babies, which he was himself not long ago. Have we figured out if he’s a he yet? Anyway, I’d check under those feathers to make sure he’s not carrying a frying pan. Breakfast anyone? xxoo

I just crack up every time I see the “prepare to die” chicken. You should end every blog post with it. :rotfl:

What kind of bird has built the nest in the chicken house? That’s one big nest.

Love, love, love your blog. :chicken:

  3. Kathryn says:

What a wonderful way to wake up! I love that chicken. Have a great day.

  4. Lauri V says:

You crack me up with that sinister chicken Suzanne! Thanks. 🙂

  5. Kelly says:

Suzanne, I love all your chickens but that one just cracks me up every time you post his little face!

Wanted you (and everyone else) to know that I made your pizza dough for dinner last night and it is the BEST! AND, it was so easy and quick. While the dough was rising I had time to rummage through the fridge and decide and prepare the toppings that I wanted to use. By the time I did that, the dough had risen and I was ready to assemble the pizzas and throw them in the oven. Quicker than delivery and waaaaaaaaaay better! Thanks so much for the recipe! My dh loved it, my kids loved it and so did I!

That crazy little chicken just keeps showing up when I least expect it. So funny.

  8. wkf says:

I love that book! Congrats on your 1st eggs. I have a hen that will try to hatch anything. I have a few other hens
who are just to busy with their yard careers to worry about
having children so I give their eggs to the nanny. She is a good mamma. I wonder if the little eggs would work???!!!
Boy wouldn’t the nanny be proud to see how well those babies could fly.

You are having so much fun!!! :flying:

  9. Sharon Elkins says:

I think you’ve had too much caffeine this morning. That one chicken does look sinister though.

  10. Jyl says:

I want the psycho chicken so bad. I wonder if I could house train him.

  11. annbb/TSannie says:

Wren eggs??? Can hardly wait for them to hatch. Smart bird for choosing the safety of your hen house!

  12. Beckynsc says:

    That’s hilarious!
I love the way you put that post together!

  13. Kristen says:

We have a nest like that in one of my horseback riding helmets in our horsey trailer…..I have seen the Mamma bird…it looks like a small chickadee or something. Maybe word got out that we like baby chicks

  14. Tina L says:

LOL funny story. I can picture the little birds fitting right in with your chickens. If only the one doesn’t scare them too much.

  15. Melissa's Cozy Teacup says:

It’s a good thing that chicken can’t read, or it might grow up with a complex! lol :chicken:

  16. Tresha says:

  17. Robin G. says:

Whoa. If I were a baby bird I would watch my back.

  18. Treasia says:

Oh I do remember that book but had forgotten about it. That is one large nest. Do you know what kind of bird made it and laid the eggs?

  19. Amy Addison says:

LOL on what will happen when they run across that particular chicken. It’s like a cross between “Are You My Mother?” and “Hansel & Gretel.”

How very, very cool, though. When we were residing the house last year, in the few days the original siding was off one of the eaves, a couple of birds started building a nest in there. I felt so bad when the workers put that siding up because the birds flew around for several days trying to figure out how to get in. they eventually found a tree in our backyard, but I had mommy guilt. For birds.

    Sheesh.

  20. Donna says:

Ohhh, how sweet! We love birds! I love to see the mama’s feed thier babies in our yard…with their little mouths open…so precious.
Hey, why not…a house is a house, birds, chickens…you know. LOL Beware of Sparticus!

  21. Diane says:

That little guy scares me. You could definitely use him on your Halloween post!

  22. Jennifer Robin says:

I can just picture it now; you’re going to have a lot of fun with this one, aren’t you! I can’t wait to see what happens when they hatch!

  23. TeresaH says:

That is cool. At least you have eggs :chicken: Just hope the psycho chicken doesn’t claim them…one psycho bird is enough!

  24. Tori Lennox says:

That Spartacus is one psycho chicken! :rotfl:

  25. Karen B says:

    :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

  26. Shimmy Mom says:

How funny -I love finding bird nests in unexpected places.

  27. Egghead says:

I absolutely crack up every time that “prepare to die” comes up. Oh it makes my morning!

  28. catslady says:

I also love the daily farm photo!

  29. Jodie says:

Spartacus is everywhere! I would like to see a photo of him now that he’s grown up a bit. You had him in one post, but we didn’t see his face to see how he looks now.

  30. Susan says:

Suzanne, they will take one look at Spartacus and head for the hills! :flying:

  31. shirley T says:

Hi Suzanne, last summer I placed a ceramic plant holder on the front porch(just for decoration). Before long I noticed a small bird building a nest in it. I watched it for progress and after a while I saw a few eggs in the bottom. One morning I awoke to a lot of bird squawking, I looked out the window and there was a large Blue-jay eating the bird eggs. He had pulled all the eggs out and their contents were spilled all over. I felt so sorry for the mother bird. I love the caption NOW YOU DIE. Thanks for all the neat photos. love your blog.

  32. Estella says:

The psycho chick will scare them to death!

  33. Brandy says:

I like Spartacus! Do you know what kind of bird those eggs belong to?

  34. Alison says:

Very neat. What type of bird made that nest. It would be great if you got a picture of the bird who made it. :flying:

  35. Suzanne McMinn says:

I don’t know what kind of bird made the nest! I haven’t seen the mama bird yet, but I’m hoping I will.

  36. Jan says:

Don’t ever stop posting that evil chicken photo! I just crack up every time I see him. Sneaky, too, the way you set us up for sentimentality with the Golden Book, then…Whamo! Love it!

  37. Kacey says:

poor little birdies don’t know what’s ahead for them…

  38. Fannie M Wiggins says:

Spartacus might fool everyone and be the most protective chicken of all. :rambo: It could happen.I hope the baby birds hatch okay. They are so cute. Have a great evening and  to all.

  39. Kareer Woman says:

  41. Minna says:

Can’t remember what the book was called, but there were some true and rather amazing stories about animals. Now, there was this chicken and one day when her nest once again was checked for eggs, instead of eggs, there were kittens! The mom of the kittens came every day to give them milk, but for the rest of the day it was the chicken who took care of them. One day, the cat had taken all the kittens with her, except for one kitten. They didn’t know if the chicken just hadn’t want to give up that kitten or if the cat had left the kitten for the chicken as a thanks.

    YIKES!! now I’m scared…
