A few days ago, when I posted about putting flowers and other fun stuff inside liquid soap bottles, several people either posted a comment or emailed me about canning jar liquid soap dispensers, like this one. They sell them at Lehman’s, too. Four dollars.
And I thought–I can make that myself. Only better. (With flowers!) And for practically nothing.
Jar.
Lid.
Fake flowers. You can put anything decorative or fun in there that’s hard and insoluble.
Liquid soap going in.
Lid back on top.
There’s a hole drilled in the center for the pump dispenser. I had this lid from….something, I don’t remember. Maybe a candle. A regular lid and band would do fine, too.
You can fix it down with hot glue if you want. If your hole is just the right size to fit snug, it’ll stay pretty fixed without glue.
Look at that.
So adorably quaint and unusual to keep anywhere and everywhere around the house. Make it unique with your own additions inside the jar. Easy and cheap to create, whether you make your own liquid soap or use store-bought. Great gift idea. And fun! (Definitely going on my Christmas-giving list this year–with my own homemade liquid soap inside.)

Only down side to these large GLASS jars and soap is that if you knock over the jar it breaks. If you try to grab it with wet/soapy hands you may drop it and it breaks. Glass all over the place is no fun. I wouldn’t suggest it for a family with little kids. For adults, it shouldn’t be much of a problem.

For those concerned about the glass factor (good point, Darlene!) re-purpose a small peanut butter jar. You could spray paint or decoupage the lid to match the decor even!

One benefit to this type of jar is – less tippability. Those narrow based store bought soap bottles tip over on my all the time. Maybe I better stick to plastic jars. Pressing the pump on this one will be much more stable.

Kathy, I’m using recycled pumps, but I’ve been told they actually sell canning jar lids WITH the pumps already installed at Lehman’s.

Now…you solve one for me. HOW do you keep the lid from rusting out?

What a wonderful idea to re-purpose canning jars. After reading everyone else’s thoughts… here are my 2 cents. 🙂
I like the foaming hand soaps. I usually get them from Bath and Body works, but the cost is astronomical and they don’t carry refills. What a waste. So I’ve been looking around for ideas. I like this one. I think, since I prefer the apple scent for my kitchen, I’ll look for some essential oil is this scent. Use some clear dish soap, and water it down so that the foaming pump will work. This will also make the soap last longer. Now, I better log off the computer so I can work on this idea. Thanks for your inspiration.
