A Milking Song

Beulah Petunia
and
sweet cream
from heaven
are what I can see
when
my Jersey’s
living with me.
I know my cheddar
dream’s
well and alive
today.
It makes its home
in my heart.
Never more will I be
without cheese
since she
promised me that
we never would part.

We named our cow Beulah Petunia.

Thank you for your help!

Okay, who can name the hymn my milking song is based on? And please forgive me for ruining your ability to ever sing it in church again without thinking about a cow.

  1. RosieJo says:

I have no clue which hymn that was suppose to be. Are you going to tell us?

  2. Julie says:

I couldn’t bring myself to vote for Beulah since that was my husband’s paternal grandma’s name (she was from WV!), but I LOVE that name! We’re considering using Beulah as part of our farm’s name ~ when we have a farm!

    Is the Hymn Beulah Land?

  3. B. Ruth says:

Every time I hear “Beulah” it reminds me of the hymn…..

    …Beulah Land…..a favorite old hymn…

  4. Jan says:

Wow! So now you have your own little BP station. Instead of petrol, you get milk!

    Jan

  5. Johanna says:

BEULAH PETUNIA! I just knew Beulah was a great cow name. And Jan — a BP Station — hysterical!

That pitcher of milk is absolutely breathtaking! I love Beulah Petunia!

    Thanks, Suzanne!

  6. Prairie Kerri says:

I am cracking up! My best milk cow is named Buelah! Love her to pieces….all 1100 pounds of her (she’s a Jersey/Holstein cross). Congrats and Happy Milking!

  7. Jenny says:

I sing to my goats when I milk them. I sing “Daisy, Daisy” and change the name to whatever goat I have on the stand and the rest of the words to stuff about milk. I don’t think I’ll bother sharing the lyrics to my version, because I think I’m already a little embarrassed to admit this much!! 😆
    ~Jenny~

  8. Peggy says:

GRRRRRRRRR……now I will be singing to myself all day until I learn the answer. I love the name.

  9. Carol says:

I love the name Beulah Petunia, the way it sounds when you say it. And…I voted for Petunia. Now you know what to whisper in her ear.
When my grandfather milked I would get close to the cow face and study her features as she ate. Her head was fastened in a stanchion in the barn, and I knew she couldn’t get me. Otherwise I was a little afraid.

  10. sally says:

Jesus is well and alive today, thats part of the chorus but maybe too long for the titlt

  11. Patrice says:

I’ve always sung to our cows and goats when I milked. It seems to calm them. The Jerseys used to really like when I said their name in one of the songs. With that said, excuse me I think the men in white coats are coming to take me away. “Quick, get her! She sings to cows! What is the neighborhood coming to?” Sorry, to much caffeine!

  12. Barbee' says:

What fun! Love it! What a lucky cow to have her own milking song. It doesn’t get any sweeter than that.

  13. AA says:

I have a friend who milks her own cow. She says sometimes the milk going into the bucket makes a sound that sounds like words being repeated. Maybe she should start singing!

  14. BuckeyeGirl says:

:bugeyed: WHAT!?!? You mean there’s such a thing as too much caffeine? WOW!! I’ve never heard of such a thing!!!

Ok, I totally love Beulah Petunia! I admit to being torn between the two names, though I voted for Beulah. The whole flower name has so much potential for ‘other’ names. I really liked Tansy too, but that suggestion came rather late in the process… Can I suggest Tansy for some future creature? It’s such a good name. And Johnny Jump Up, which are such valiant little flowers. OK, I’ll stop, it’s time to go let the hens out anyway… maybe there really is something to that caffeine thing! :help: uh oh!!

  15. Joy says:

Look at the CREAMY COLOR of that milk! We used to buy milk from a Jersey farm when I was a kid. Mom had all the cream she could use just from the top of the milk! Is the hymn Beulah Land?

  16. chickypez says:

Haha I was going to say Blue Skies and Rainbows, then I scrolled through the comments and saw that you had already posted it! And we are Church of Christ, so maybe that’s why we know the song. Haha

  17. Dreamer says:

Definitely a Church of Christ thing. I’ve never heard this song before and we sing all the old hymns at church. I did a little research and found out it was written by a Church of Christ music leader in the early ’70s. Pretty song though! And I like your Beulah version.

  18. Patrice says:

Suzanne, Did Beulah’s baby come home with you too? If so, what did you name him/her?

  19. Barbee' says:

If she has twins, the cow that is, they could be named Tansy and Yarrow. Guess I’m rushing things a bit.

  20. Gini says:

How wonderful! My first car was named “Beulla” and this is a nice reminder. 🙂

  21. lavenderblue says:

Beulah Petunia is a great name, it sings all by itself. I somehow missed the naming party, but couldn’t have picked a better one for her.

Tansy, however, is what I decided long ago to name my first goat, whenever I may get her. Of course, by the time I get her, I’ll probably forget what I wanted to name her. Heck, by the time I get her, I’ll probably forget what I wanted a goat for.

  22. claudia w says:

I missed the naming vote too, but I really like the name Beulah Petunia. It is so befitting your beautiful cow!
    That milk looks so healthy!!!

  23. princessvanessa says:

When I was very young (mid 1950s) we got raw milk from neighboring dairies. We kept it in a one gallon glass pickle jar, a piece of wax paper over the opening and the metal lid twisted on over the wax paper. Before it was used for drinking, we would shake it up, let the cream rise, and skim it off for coffee. We left a little cream to be shaken back into the milk each time we used it. Yummmmm. I remember the milk actually having a naturally sweet “taste”, unlike today’s sterile, flavorless, store-bought milk.

  24. ~ Jackie says:

I remember having to shake the milk when I was little. In fact, I still do that with store bought milk. I can’t wait until I too, can have fresh healthy milk again!

  25. Fran says:

I’m not looking at the replies above – I know that song by heart! Blue Skies and Rainbows! My kids have been singing it since they were babies. They used to sing it when they rode the Joy Bus to Bible class at the Church of Christ when we lived in Texas. I love Beulah Petunia’s name!
