Letter to Coco

I don’t want to let you go.

I don’t want to give you to the goats.

I know I will still see you and sometimes you can come up the stairs to visit me, but I’m going to miss you being here all the time. I’m going to miss how you bounce across the porch on your giant puppy paws and how you pretend to just accidentally “fall” inside the house if you find the door cracked open for a minute. I’m going to miss how you go to bed with the farm shih-tsu on the big pink blanket and how you just collapse like you’re dead–going from 100 mph to zero in one second–when you’re ready to sleep. I’m going to miss how you get up at 6 am and start dragging that pink blanket around and how the farm shih-tsu tries to bite your head off for waking him up when you throw him off it. And I’m really going to miss how you pick up your food bowl in your mouth and carry it to me when you’re hungry.

I’m going to miss how you like your belly rubbed when you stretch out on the porch and how you find the most ridiculous positions–and places–to sleep.

I’m going to miss how you like to follow me all over the farm and ride in my car. And I know the chickens are going to miss how you like to come with me to let them out every morning and put them away every night.

I’m going to miss how you used to fit into the washtub and how you used to be clean.

I know that what you have to do now is important, and I know that you will be good at your job.

But I’m going to miss how you used to love me more than you love the goats because I know that soon you won’t.

P.S. Don’t forget who gave you all those Snausages.

P.P.S. I have more.

    Glory!!! she is beautiful….

  2. Lisa L says:

Ah can’t you just pickup another dog to do the work and keep this one for the porch?

  3. Heidi says:

She is so sweet! it’ll be ok, she will remember you, at least for the snausages!! LOL

  4. anne says:

    Oh Suzanne,
That is the cutest pic of Coco in the bathtub. What a
    beautiful dog!!

  5. wkf says:

Isn’t she going to be right under the porch? Do you really think the goats will stay right there in their pen? Coco and the goats and the poor shihtzu will all be on the porch.

Better get a bigger blanket. :flying:

  6. Mental P Mama says:

LOL. I bet she’ll have those goats mastering those porch stairs in no time at all! :elephant:

  7. jane says:

Me too!!!! Love the pic in the bathtub – you should enter that in a contest or something. will she have to stay in the pen with the goats? what about winter? Inquiring animal lovers want to know

  8. happyathome says:

O.k., we have a little mom separation anxiety here goin’….she is not going off to school, not moving to another state….but going right down the stairs to the goat area just doin’ her job! Don’t forget, she will be right there come meal time! They grow up so fast down they!

  9. Suzanne McMinn says:

Jane, she will stay mostly with the goats. (She should stay with them ALL the time but I’m not sure I can resist having her company sometimes….) She has a dog house she can use in the winter, and straw, and before winter comes, there will also be a small mini-barn/shelter built for the goats to get in out of the cold, too, and she could also go in there. She has a heavy coat, too.

  10. Blaze says:

Awww heh, thats the only problem with having farm animals sometimes you get too attached to them and forget they are working animals and not pet’s.
But you’ll still get to see her and play with her some which will be good!
    And feeds her snausages! :snoopy:

  11. Shimmy Mom says:

They grow up so fast. I think she’ll find her way to the porch every once in a while to say “Hello” (and get my snausages.)

  12. Donna says:

and don’t forget, Coco, if they ever tire of you there, that Miss Donna will bring you here and I will hug you and love on you and spoil you rotten, even MORE!! (hee hee)

Oh, Suzanne, that was soooo adorable! I LOVE THAT PUP! That is the cutest pic of Coco sleeping under your SUV!!!! How precious! Just like a baby…no wonder we love pups so much!   :woof:  :chicken:

  13. Donna says:

oh, and the chicken or Rooster? is GORGEOUS – what pretty colors they are!

  14. Kathy R says:

You know you will be down at the bottom of the stairs with the goats, and CoCo most of your waking hours so you won’t be missing any of them. (Bring the snausages along with you when you visit.)

  15. Kim says:

Awwww, it’s so hard when little ones grow up.

  16. Sharon Elkins says:

I can’t believe how big he’s gotten. In another month, he’s going to be a “Horse”

  17. Gail says:

    Suzanne,
It’s time to send the Great Pyrenees off the porch when they explore their surroundings and come back grubby! We went throught that with our two Pyr pups. No longer were they the soft balls of pure white fluff…they had become
the WORKING dogs, covered with the days grit and grime. Our Sophie and Mack come out of the goat yard twice a day to eat, run , and play…and yes, up on the porch with us. Mack at close to 100lbs, (6 mos.) still climbs halfway up on my lap for his daily lovin’! Coco will love you the same, she’s just adding goat relationships. The farm is growing, and so are Coco’s responsibilities. It’s her job to serve and protect!

  18. Crystal B. says:

    What sweet pictures. 🙂

  19. Claudia W says:

They just grow up too fast! But then there are baby goats to watch over. At least Coco isn’t leaving far away, that would be really hard to take. She’s just going to be in the yard! She’s so cute though, I’d miss her being on the porch with me too.

  20. Debbie in Memphis says:

Awww – you’re breaking my heart this morning. She is such a beautiful, sweet dog. She’ll always love her Momma. It’s like with us and our kids – her heart will grow bigger so that she can fit you and the goats and the chickens all inside it.

  21. Egghead says:

What a sweet dog. How much cuter could she get? :chicken:

  22. diana says:

i don’t know how i found your site, but i stumbled across it a couple weeks ago. you are livng the life i want to have someday! i am learning alot from reading your posts. and i understand coco has to be a working dog, but let him still be momma’s dog a little bit each day! everyone needs his momma now and then! :cowsleep:

  23. Jennifer Robin says:

This is one of my favorite posts ever, so poignant, yet still funny. Coco is growing so fast! How much food does she eat a day?

  24. Jodie says:

Coco is a big marshmellow but it’s time to add the chocolate (mud) and the graham crackers (goats) to make a working dog out of her. I’m sure she will still come to visit you & Dookie. She will miss the pink blanket and riding in the car with you!

  25. Brandy says:

Aww, you’re making me sad. I don’t think I could let her go, you’re far braver than I am.

  26. Kacey says:

Ah, Coco, you can come live on my porch, heck, I’d even let you inside…you know, if you ever get tired of the goats…

  27. Susan says:

Coco will always be close!

  28. Estella says:

    Coco is growing so fast!

  29. Donna Mc says:

Awe – I’d have a hard time with this too. BUT then I have a 100lb golden retriever who still thinks he’s a lap puppy.
But she won’t be far – just moved ‘downstairs’. Maybe you can teach her to catch ‘snausages’ as you toss them over the porch railing.=) That would be a fun game! Our pup likes to catch pancakes. So I always have to be sure to make a few extra for the pup…not easy w/ a teen-stomach in the house.
    Good Luck!

  30. Shari C says:

The pictures of Coco are so adorable. I am sure it is difficult to let go, but she won’t be far away and I am sure she will be coming up on the porch to visit often, especially if you have those sausages.

  31. catslady says:

    Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww :purr:

  32. smiledarlin says:

I know it is hard— heartbreaking really…
but it is even harder picking up the dead goats or searching for the missing ones- because they were NOT being watched.
That is Coco’s job! She will be much happier- it’s in her blood!
My ex has a GP for his goats and he and his dogs can’t come near without Hondo corralling the goats behind him and barking. Hondo lets them know when something is “out there>>” that is threatening. It is a real relief having a REAL guard dog.
Especially living out in the country… to many critters that like to eat chickens and goats and lambs… things that go bump in the night!
You will love her even more for what she truly is-
A strong female that will protect your family!

    But she really is pretty

  33. Cat says:

Coco is one of the cutest puppies I have ever seen!
I want one just like her!!!!!

  34. Donna says:

LOL I just realized I have prob. been calling COCO “HE” all this time…just ignore me…must be this perio menopause mess. LOL Either way, I know the “fluff puff”.

  35. TeresaH says:

awwww…he won’t forget you. He’ll know he has a job to do, but I bet it becomes a case of not only guarding the goats, but the entire farm. :snoopy:

  36. Dawn says:

look at that face, can’t you see she is telling you I will always luv u mom? I can’t have my dogs here and I miss them, thank you for sharing Coco with me.
