The Slow Frontier

Whew. We have Frontier DSL internet and phone service here at the farm. In the country in West Virginia, you’re lucky if you can at least get DSL, so I mostly try to not complain since it’s so much better than the only other alternative, which is satellite. I had satellite for years and it was expensive and worse. Anyway, the DSL and phone both went out and stayed out for an entire week. I called (using my spotty cell service) Frontier every day like clockwork. I talked to many very nice Frontier people. They always told me that a crew was coming! It would be fixed tomorrow! And they were making notes on the ticket in the computer! I ended every call, after a few days, the same way. “You know that movie Groundhog Day where the guy wakes up every day and it’s like the day before never happened and he has to live it all over again? That’s what this phone call is like. I’m going to get up tomorrow, make this phone call, and it’s going to be like the phone call the day before never happened!”

Pictured above, see the Frontier truck fixing a corroded connection on the pole in front of the farm. He came up to the house and said, “That was an easy fix.”

EASY FIX?!

It only took him about 30 minutes! Yet it took them a week to get out here! Five minutes after he left, the internet went out again, then was back, then out, and was very random and sporadic for several days. Today is the first day that it has come on and stayed on.

Keep your fingers crossed for me!

How frustrating! :hissyfit: Sure have missed your posts and hope your internet continues to work without interruption.

Here in suburbs of a very large city we have problems with Frontier also. Had to call them two days ago because the internet went down. The employees are very nice but the ones I dealt with were clueless as to how to fix the problem and they could only get a technician here in 3-4 days. Luckily it repaired itself later that day. When I called to cancel the technician, they though I had DSL. I don’t. Omg!

Glad yours is up and working again. I enjoy your posts.

That is frustrating. Good to know everything is ok. I’ve been concerned about the long silence. Yes, please give us a family/animal update. We missed you. :happyflower:

it doesn’t matter what carrier you have or where you live. i’m convinced that it happens because they hate us. i have verizon – a big-time player in this field, no? i live within 2 miles of their control center. i kept losing internet every few days for a couple of days at a time and calling for service each time. they kept saying there was nothing wrong or that it was fixed. how they could tell that in india or the philapines is something i’ll never know. finally i said i would carry my computer down to the (location deleted) center and throw it through their own window unless someone actually rang my bell and walked through my door. the next day a polite young lady examined the computer to make sure it wasn’t my fault and had a man climb the pole with testing whatevers. he tested transmitters for blocks around here until he found the one that the squirrels chewed through. then they tried to make light of it by saying that these things happen all the time. the lady tech told me to say that i would report them to the FCC if they didn’t repair it immediately. turns out, no carrier likes to be reported to the FCC. they get fined in a big way by them and the Something Communications Board. so keep that in your bag of tricks for the next time you have a problem. mention the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) and the Whatever Communication Board (sorry about that one). happy that it worked out well in the end. type fast.

This seems to be the norm now days, have you noticed in many stores that use to have a large sign saying “Customer Service” has been replaced with with the word “Service”.
Keeping all digits crossed for you.

I get pixelated all the time…computer and TV. The “customer service” person told me it’s because all my neighbors are either watching TV or using their computers and we are all drawing off the same signals. And for this I pay $180 a month! (that’s phone, TV and computer)

Oh Suzanne~ I think about you so often. We lived in Philippi for years while my husband finished up his schooling (Alderson-Broaddus) and fell in love with the people and the state. We would have stayed after graduation if my husband hadn’t already promised a company he would work for them when his schooling was complete.
How is the clean up going on the farm? How is it going in your part of WV? I’m sure there will be parts of West Virginia that will never be the same.
Do you guys have help from the government or are neighbors helping neighbors like LA? There was and has been so little media coverage. Seems like no one is capturing the news unless your name is “Trump” or Clinton”.

Please know that I pray for you and our all our good friends in Philippi who are still struggling to recuperate from the flooding.

I know what you mean about hating to complain. We are right on the edge of the DSL range. It seems to me that as the families with children between me and the hub grow up our signal breaks down more often.
I hope you were included in the price break resulting from the lawsuit. That also helps with my patience.
I heard a rumor from a service man that 5G is going to provide amazing coverage, even out here in the sticks and that DirecTV/ATT have a new setup that they are now testing. Not Hughes, something new. There is always something coming, we just have to wonder how much it will cost.

Ah technology…the blessed curse! Our internet goes out from time to time for no apparent reason, but perhaps more like a rolling black out. I don’t even bother calling, I figure they’ll flip the switch back to “on” when they feel like it, which seems to be 15 min. later. Then again, if my livelihood depended upon the Web, I wouldn’t be so blase’ about it. Glad you’re back — for now 😕
