It’s the Chickens in the Road Party on the Farm 2009!
See last year’s party on the farm here.
Date and time: Sunday, October 11, 1 pm to 7 pm. This is the tail-end of the Black Walnut Festival weekend here, to coordinate with people who may come into town for that. (Find Black Walnut Festival information here.) If you’re in the area, or will be in the area that weekend, please come!
I’m going to ask everyone to bring something (food or other party item) and that will be arranged after I have a confirmed list. I’ll be asking everyone who brings a dish to post the recipe in the Community Cookbook OR to bring a dish already posted in the Community Cookbook–so we can all go home and make our favorites!
There will be activities/demonstrations going on throughout the party, including corn husk and grapevine crafts, canning, cheesemaking, and milking. (I have a friend who will be bringing a goat that is in milk.) And, of course, the “petting zoo” will be open. (Entry fee: one cookie.)
If you’re interested in attending, please email me with your name plus anyone you plan to bring with you. I’ll ask you to confirm two weeks in advance. Parking, food, and other information will go out to the confirmed list only. Due to the organization and coordination that will be required to pull this off, we can’t have drop-ins.
If you can’t come, don’t worry–we’ll have pictures!
If you are coming, I suggest you bring a rake.
I’m just sayin’.

Beth says:
Looking forward to the pictures. Wish I could join in! And I’d bring my 14 yo daughter. She’d catch Mean Rooster and hug him and love him and stroke his feathers the wrong way and call him George.
In all seriousness, whenever one of the chickens or geese (or any other animal we have) acts up, she catches them and holds them till they have no choice but to calm down. (no, not by strangling them)

Debbie says:
Oh I hope I can come!!! Sounds like a blast. I’ve never been to W. Virginia. Looks like pretty countryside.
Wish me luck today, I’m going to make the burnt sugar cake again. Third times the charm, right? Approximately how long did you whip your egg whites, the recipe calls for whipping until fluffy, I’m assuming that is soft peak stage? Also, did you use 8 or 9 inch pans? Thanks!
P.S. Mean rooster looks like he means business!

Suzanne says:
Debbie, I use 9-inch pans! Remember to cool the syrup to room temperature. Beat the egg whites till they’re fluffy, which is more than soft peak. You don’t need them seriously stiff, but get a lot of air in them. (That’s what the beating does for egg whites.)

Hi Suzanne:
Wish I weren’t hundreds of miles away because your chicken party sounds great. BTW I ordered my own cheese making kit (it came yesterday) and I can’t wait to try it out. Thanks for the link to the site. Have fun and give big puppy a hug.

Susie says:
I’m like Lisa-in-Cal and the others all over the place! I wish I could come on up there for this festivity! Heck I even wish I lived close by with rake in hand of course! So for now, I will just play farmville in Facebook. It is a cute Application that my daughter got me hooked on. Oh now I discovered you can make the animals walk around on your farm.

I’m not sure exactly where Charlestown is–we’re in Roane County here, if you have a map that shows counties.

Bev says:
Hey Suzanne..how far from Fairmont, WV are you? And are there any campgrounds close to where you are? We have been looking for a get-a-way
On September 18, 2009 at 12:25 pm
Suzanne says:
Bev, I’m not sure where Fairmont is–near Morgantown? I think that’s about 5-6 hours? Maybe. I could be wrong! Click the link for the Black Walnut Festival and there’s info there and may have campground info, too.
On September 18, 2009 at 12:40 pm
Bev says:
OK..do ya live in (or around) Walton? I swear it’s like detective work to find out where ya live..LOL
If so we are only about 2 hours apart! I would love to come to the party. I need to see what them families plans are before I know for sure.
On September 18, 2009 at 1:57 pm
Suzanne says:
Yes, Walton, sorry! Or try using Spencer on Google maps. I’m not sure if Walton would show up.
On September 18, 2009 at 2:49 pm
wvhomecanner says:
Fairmont is 20 minutes North of me – I am in Bridgeport and I am 115 miles/2 hours from Spencer according to Yahoo maps.
And I may be coming :shimmy:

I think that would be fun, but i am scared of your ‘bouncer’. Feed Mean Rooster rooster well so he leaves everyone alone.

People, use google maps to find out how far you are from Suzanne. Suzanne, post the nearest town at least so folks can get an estimate.

Now I wish I had moved to WV instead of Iowa! I will eagerly watch for photos. Ask Clover to keep Mean Rooster under control – tell her she can even wear a sheriff’s hat and badge. Bet she’d do it!

Like so many others, I will have to enjoy the party vicariously, I am waaaay too far away to attend. Sigh.
