We set off in the snow to fetch Mr. Pibb on Sunday morning. If it had been up to my driving ability alone, we would have been snow-bound. The road scares me when it’s covered like this. No snow plows come down our road. No salt, no cinders, no help. Except for 52, who did the driving. Or else I would have never gotten off the farm to fetch Mr. Pibb on Sunday.
This is the part of the road I call “the scary part” even though it’s all scary sometimes.
(Excuse these photos taken through a wet windshield.) See how narrow it is and how the ground drops off steeply right at the side of the road? Sliding on ice would be a bad idea here.
But Mr. Pibb was waiting for us! We couldn’t let him down. And things were okay once we were on the interstate.
We were originally due to pick up Mr. Pibb a couple of weeks ago, but the big snowstorm got in the way. As a result, Mr. Pibb made a layover in Virginia where another fainting goat had been delivered at that same time. We got there as soon as we could and saved him from the gang of chickens persecuting him in their hen house.
I’m just kidding. The only thing scary on that farm was this Boer-cross goat.
Who reminded me of this one of our Jacob sheep.
No wonder Mr. Pibb was in the hen house! I bundled him up with a big, thick towel and sat him beside me in the truck.
There and back (11-hour round trip), I crocheted two dishcloths with pretty ruffly edges.
I tried to teach Mr. Pibb to crochet….
….but all he wanted to do was snuggle.
It was late, long after dark, when we got him home. We put him in the goat pen with just Fanta and Sprite for company. They slept in the dog house together. Though when I went down in the morning to check on Mr. Pibb, he was nowhere to be found. I thought, oh no, Fanta and Sprite ATE HIM! They looked pretty guilty, and he IS little! You know goats will eat anything!
Turns out he was hiding at the back of the dog house behind them. He didn’t want to come out. Really, nobody wanted to come out yesterday and the chickens wondered why I made them come out.
The goats and Poky took Mr. Pibb’s arrival well. No fussing. They understand he’s just a wee thing. Clover will wait till he’s a bit older before she beats him up and puts him in his proper place. She’s patient like that. Mr. Pibb did emerge from hiding a few times during the day, mostly to run back and forth between the goat house and the dog house in the goat pen, and once or twice to eat.
He watched from afar when I broke out the Christmas ornament cookies.
Wouldn’t take one step near a cookie.
It snowed all day yesterday. Non-stop. This is the fifth winter I’ve lived in West Virginia and it has snowed more already this winter than the last four winters combined and I thought it was a lot of snow before. I’ve never lived anywhere that it snowed more than like once a year and then just a little bit.
It’s supposed to snow all week.
I’m gonna stay put and keep house.
And talk Mr. Pibb into a cookie. Sprite and Fanta wouldn’t take cookies when they first got here either. But they do now.
I know your kind, Mr. Pibb.
I’ll win you over to the dark side. Don’t worry, we have candy sprinkles here.

Hi Suzanne! I’ll definitely be voting for you! This may sound like a dumb question, but what do you have the goats and sheep for? Milk? Wool? Pets only? I’m just curious. I have a pretty good sized pen outback. Can goats & sheep be in a pen together? How much room do they need? Thanks!

Congratulations on getting Mr. Pibb Home safely. He’s adorable. Would love to meet your fainters one day. What is their size relative to the Nigies and do they get along well?
On January 5, 2010 at 7:13 am
Suzanne McMinn says:
Shelley, we haven’t had a full-grown fainter yet so I can’t compare, but the fainters are smaller than the standard size goat, so I’m expecting them to not be much bigger than the Nigerians. We’ll see in a year when we get some full-grown! Sprite and Fanta are still just big babies.

Mr. Pibb is just a lovey dovey, just the look on his face in the car when he looked up at you, it was as if he was saying,”I am so glad I am here with you and I love you very much.” He will soom get the hang of cookie time.
I am afraid if I had animals such as your, I would never get anthing done! I would just want to be around them too much of the the time. When we are out in the car and drive by animals I always just want to stop and hug them, I know–Hubby thinks I am a bit daft too!
We are having snow just about every day here in this part of Ohio but not like you are having in WV. We have family there also and it has been difficult for them as well. That strech of road is so scary, I dont know how anyone can drive it, I would be hanging on to the bushes etc, even if I was walking on it on a sunny day. I thing you need a helicopter. Scares Me!! Thank goodness for 52.
Stay safe.
JO
PS–Suzanne, could you do a post on making bagels? I went into the city yesterday, and the shop where I buy bagels is now up to $10 a dozen, that is too much for me. I love real bagels, not the kind you buy in the bread section of the super market.

I LOVE Mr. Pibb and will be praying for his well-being and safety whilst being initiated by Clover!
I have not made a comment before, but I want to let you know that I voted for you every day through the previous contest and am one of your most devoted “lurkers.” I drove through your area at Christmas time and my, what a lot of snow!
I am a knitter, but am determined to learn to crochet this year. Would you consider sharing your pot holder pattern on the blog? It looks like a good one to start with.
Blessings to you and your family, and stay warm!

Suzanne McMinn says:
Vanessa, most people have told me they nominated me in multiple categories–the ones I listed in the post (Best Photography, Best Writing, Best Food, Best Humorous). Some also told me they nominated also in Best of the Year. If you nominate in multiple, it will give me the best shot. Thank you!!

Suzanne, loved the pics today. I don’t see how you get anything done around there with so many cuties to play with.
Oh, and I would love to be entered in the BBB.

I love to read your blog and enjoy it every day, but there is no way I would ever live where I might have to drive on a road like your in conditions like those! Ever!! That is one cute little goat you’ve got there.

Good Evening Suzanne,
I love your blog, have been reading it for a few months now.
I grew up in the country and our family always had a variety of animals. Only remember having a baby goat for a very short time, but remember bringing him into our kitchen and feeding him milk from a baby bottle. Your stories bring back so many good memories of living in the country.
Can’t wait to hear & see how Mr. Pibbs blossoms!

Gosh, Mr.Pibb looks so cute and shy. Please don’t let Clover be too rough on him.
I live in town and hate to leave the house in the winter. It would only be the chance to bring home a goat that would get me down that road in the winter. Bless 52 and his driving abilities.
Am I the only one who thought Suzanne’s old photo looked a little like Martha Stewart? This one looks (I’m assuming, going by your film)more like you.
Going now to see if I can figure out that voting thing. BBB, please.

I would like the BBB and a goat, but the hubby says no goats. We already have dogs, cats and horses. My neighbors have chickens so I get those great fresh free range eggs. Can’t beat em.

Thank you, Suzanne, for steering me to the “right”, or should I say “write”, categories. I used my 3 e-mail accounts and nominated you in multiples.
If I had paid better attention I would have seen, for myself, that I could nominate for a multiple of categories. Perhaps I can join your “staff”, as I do tend to run around ‘like a chicken with “shh” my head cut off’. Hope they didn’t hear me down in youe hen-yard.

Welcome Mr. Pibbs! You are a woman of great wisdom and restraint. I’d be SO tempted to make him a house goat.
Can you please post the pattern for your dishcloth? It is lovely!
Thanks,
