Bar Fly

Remember my bar in the cellar? Okay, so first there came this huge rat. I’m talking about the biggest rat I’ve ever seen in my life. And I’m not exaggerating! I have seen the rat. Once. He was climbing on the shelves when I walked in one day and he froze, like rat-in-the-headlights, and we just stared at each other. And then I nearly started crying because the rat was so big. It was like the size of a squirrel, only fatter.

I knew there was something in there. I had set two mousetraps. The rat ate the peanut butter and tossed the traps over his shoulder, laughing. I set them again, this time with cheese. Same result.

And then I saw the rat and I understood. Something else needs to be done. Maybe a SWAT team.

Meanwhile, yesterday, this little bird joined the party.

Yes, really, now there’s a bird in the cellar.

I give up. I might as well just serve them a drink and we’ll all start telling stories!

I have never seen a rat–well, at least the four legged kind, only on TV. It must have been a scary moment for you. Maybe if you give him a couple of cocktails, you can talk him out.
The little bird is so sweet. We really enjoy the little birds and try to feed them well especially this time of the year.

awwww, sweet little Carolina Wren. They love to be in people places.

Love the Carolina Wren. They have a beautiful voice and very loud to be so small. You need a BIG rat trap for that big guy or some carefully placed rat poison. Good luck with the cellar bar party. Stay warm. It is 11 degrees right now in North Alabama so I’m sure it’s colder there.

YIKES!! I would have frozen too Suzanne….don’t know for how long……think I would have slowly backed out, being so scared, and then tears would just start running down my face….that would have been my reaction. whew……yup, you gotta get rid of it else everytime you walk in there…you’ll be looking for it and you will be fearful……get your guys to get it !!! I bet they aren’t afraid!!

my great pyr caught a rat about that size out in our barn. I walked in one day to feed and there she was playing with it. I thought she’d killed a cat at first… it was huge! good dog

This reminds me of the time when I encountered vermin in my local grocery market. I was just rounding the corner of the produce aisle when I saw it lumbering toward me, keeping in the shadow of the meat fridge, so at first I immediately thought “RAT!” but seeing its face then I realized it was a possum. The lady facing me looked white as a ghost and asked me if it was what she thought it was, I calmly said, “No, it’s a possum.” She relaxed, and I’m still kinda amazed that neither of us screamed. Anyway, the little rodent (about the size of a small rat dog) scurried behind the meat counter. I told one of the butchers, a young burrly man, and he instantly went into hunter mode and raised up his 14″ butcher’s knife over his head and said, “Where is he?” Thankfully, the manager happened to walk up and calmly took over the situation. I don’t know what happened, ’cause I made a beeline for the check out line!

How about some of the barn cats coming to stay in the cellar? I’m unfamiliar with the beer drinking habits of barn cats. If they’re anything like house cats, they should be happy with rat hunting an a feast afterward.

The little wren, however, is probably out scouting for for the entire flock. They are big party peeps and love beer. Prepare yourself for the migration to your cellar. Worm and grub hors d’Oeuvres will be greatly appreciated!

Rats in the cellar, bats in the belfry?

Time to send in the pros . . . um, that would be the farm cat. I had a farm cat that not only caught rats nearly as large as he, but would also go after any critter large or small who he determined to be an intruder. Good ole Ulysses, he was one of the best.

    HI Susan,
Just saw this on FB today and thought it might be helpful for your RAT!! You would need a bigger bottle (say a 2 liter pop bottle) but you (hopefully would capture him alive)!! I’m sure you could come up with a recipe for rat pie or rat soup?? LOL Love you blog….it brightens my day!!

    Whatever happened to Weston’s rat?

Reminds me of a house we used to live in. A rat chewed its way under our bathtub and through the kitchen wall. I knew it was a rat because in one night it ate 1/2 a loaf of bread. One morning I was the only one up, fixing lunch for my DH and breakfast for the kids. All of a sudden I heard this commotion between the fridge and cabinet. I looked down and it was a RAT going between them. I scream at my DH to get himself in the kitchen RIGHT NOW. He thought I had seen a mouse so that night he set a rat trap, tied it onto the oven door, thinking he was being funny. The next morning I slipped into the kitchen, turned on the light and there in the trap layed a RAT! I went back to the bedroom and told him to get his butt out of the bed and get that thing out of my kitchen. I was so freaked out by that nasty thing, I could have died.

Suzanne, I deal with many rats because the place we bought 3 years ago was overrun because of the quail and rabbit food left out. I either shoot them, let my dog catch and kill them. And they will, forget cats they think the rats are not of their breed to kill, too big I suppose. The other thing is, feed it chocolate, that will kill it. Just put a bar of chocolate down and it will eat it and be done. I have so many rats I would have to buy costco out to get rid of them so this is the last choice. Mix equal amounts of chocolate powder, plaster of paris and sugar well in a flat pan. DRY. Put a pan of water by it and say good buy to your rat. Don’t let any other critters get into the mix as it will harden the stomach of anything that eats it.

BTW, beautiful little wren. I love birds.
