A Mother, After All

Maybe she was just feeling especially young the day she had her baby. Maybe she wasn’t ready. Maybe she was scared. Whatever it was, after over a week of holding Sprite down to nurse her baby against her will, for the last few days–

She has been nursing her baby voluntarily!!!

Sprite: “I am a mother!”

In fact….

….she’s been nursing a lot of babies!

Sprite: “I thought I just had one. Nobody told me that they multiplied.”

Fanta: “Baby stealer!”

Don’t worry, they’re sharing. Sprite’s baby and Fanta’s babies don’t seem to be able to tell their mothers apart. They nurse on both Sprite and Fanta. The only person not nursing anybody anymore is me. I’ve put the bottle away.

Oh, well, and Nutmeg–at least, she’s not nursing any of those babies. Nutmeg only nurses Dr. Pepper. The other babies don’t even try with her anymore. And Dr. Pepper knows who his mommy is and he doesn’t try to nurse Sprite or Fanta.

Which is good, because Sprite and Fanta are busy enough with the other three.

And that is the happy end to the story of the mother who didn’t want to be a mother. She is, she is!

Here’s a little video of Sprite nursing, and that rascal Dr. Pepper:

Sprite and Fanta, in unison: “Nutmeg, you can keep THAT ONE all to yourself!”

I think Nutmeg’s gonna have her hands, er hooves, full….

And rascal or not, Dr. Pepper is crazy gorgeous…
Is Mr. Pibb the father of this one, too? I can’t remember. I’m basing my guess entirely on the fact that they’re both some gorgeous man-goats. And cuz… you know, it’s Mr. Pibb.

  3. Bev in CA says:

Success. All your hard work paid off. Love the video. The look in Sprite’s eyes is priceless. They are all so beautiful.

  12. Carmen at Old House Kitchen says:

Yay!! So happy for them both! And YOU! Great job! That Dr. Pepper IS a rascal! So much energy! I love how he was giving his mamma a back massage! LOL! The kiddos are going to flip when they hear that Sprite will nurse her little one by herself! It’s been the talk of the dining room table, you know. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  13. ellen mcbryde says:

That Little Mr Pibb is just pure trouble! Thanks for the early morning giggles! I love kids. They are so playful and silly!

  14. Rachel from Maine says:

Could anything be cuter than baby goats? I’m so glad that Sprite is a mama at last. This just makes my day! :snoopy:

  15. Beecie says:

What great news to start my morning with!! Nice to know you can teach a young goat new tricks. And my little guy is going to love watching Dr. Pepper. Over and over and over! Everyone gets a treat today ;).

  16. CindyP says:

Your determination payed off! But she was outnumbered, might as well deal with it ๐Ÿ™‚

Dr Pepper IS a handful, no wonder Nutmeg only deals with him! One’s enough!

  17. Sue says:

    YAY!! Wonderful news!

  18. 4jsMOM says:

  25. ~Andrea~ says:

Well this is good news! I felt so bad for that little baby of hers, I’m glad you didn’t let nature take its course at the beginng but perservered instead, well done!

  26. Jane says:

Wow.. did you see that head butt? Nutmeg doesn’t seem to like the other brown baby much, does she?!

  27. texwisgirl says:

Hurray for Ms. Sprite!!! Not only being a good mom to hers but to Fanta’s two as well! Amazing! SO glad.

That Dr. Pepper is a wild child! Maniac on 4 little tiny hooves! At least he only seems to jump onto Nutmeg – the other two moms would probably throw a fit! I think I’ve seen this kid in Walmart!

  28. Urbanite says:

That’s great that your efforts paid off and Sprite is now a real mama. Dr. Pepper is the funniest kid I’ve seen. I love how Nutmeg just ignores him jumping on her back and running wild.

  29. glenda says:

I am glad you didn’t give up on her too soon.

I was hopeful she would eventually accept the baby….but I don’t know goats at all.

Happy for the entire family…you and the goats.

  30. Brenda says:

Dr. Pepper sure has the right name – full of piss and vinegar. But how adorable they all are. I’m so happy that Sprite came to her senses. She maybe was having a little PMS after giving birth. I’m sure the little one will not forget it’s surrogate mothers who fed her and loved her briefly. What I love about your videos Suzanne is that I can hear all the farm sounds – it’s so soothing.

  31. KentuckyFarmGirl says:

Yeah!!! So glad she decided to be a momma!!

  32. Susan says:

Patience and perseverance paid off! Sprite is a Mom after all! Dr. Pepper, he be stirrin’ up things in the Goat House, what a handful he is…Whenever I get the longing for the country life full of precious creatures, I can live vicariously thru your videos and posts..Thank you!!

So happy to see Sprite with a ‘smile’ on her face, and it’s all due to your determination. Good work.

  34. BethAnn says:

Dr. Pepper is funnnyyy! Wish I could bottle up that energy and hop around my house like that….think how clean it would be…and how thin I’d be!
    BethAnn

  35. Ramona says:

Oh Lawd! What a little booger.

  36. Jessica says:

What a good momma Sprite! That little Dr Pepper is so cute running around like that, and trying to be on his momma’s back, what a handful!

I sure can’t wait to live in a place where I can have goats again. *sigh*

  37. Katie M says:

I don’t think his name should be Dr. Pepper, it looks like he’s more of a Tigger!

  38. Carolyn D. Tx Aggie mom says:

:sun: So happy to know that your perserverance, and the hormones, finally kicked in and Sprite is really a MOMMY goat afterall. CITR helps me get through the days when I am overwhelmed by issues in my own family. Thank you so much for bringing such joy to my life. You are my hero.

  39. Imperious Fig says:

Boy, Dr. Pepper is still fully carbonated!

  40. Donna Mc says:

Are you sure he isn’t a Mtn Dew Full Throttle kind of kid? hahaha!

Wahoo on our little goat mama giving in. BUT MAYBE…it was really just the gang of kids just wore her out & she just surrendered from exhaustion….been there, done that! =)

  41. Melissa Marsh says:

I love how Nutmeg doesn’t mind at all that her baby is standing on her back! LOL. Too, too cute.

  42. Lavon says:

Watching them play, reminds me of a story my grandmother used to tell me. When she was a little girl her family had a goat that would climb up to the hay loft in the barn, go to the door, bleat a couple of times and then JUMP down to the ground! And repeat that several times before he (or she)would find something else to do!

  43. Zusiqu says:

I think I remember you saying Sprite cried in pain while birthing. Maybe she was associating the pain with the kid? Nursing feels good, so that probably turned that around in her mind. In any case, I am delighted Sprite decided to be a mommy after all!

  44. Kelly says:

Yay! I’m so glad the story took a happy turn after starting out so badly. Don’t you just love all that bouncing baby activity in the goat house? :sun:

  45. Cindy H. says:

Awwwww glad she’s a real mommy now!
Dr. Pepper….boy howdy he is definitely a rascal!

  46. Lynne says:

    What wonderful news! :snoopy:

p.s. That boy is a busy little thing! Watch out momma!

  47. Bev says:

Suzanne, I can tell that goat has either been hypnotized or drugged!!! Just look at the glazed over eyes, and the stoic posture!!! LOL. Plus she is not only nursing the fruit of her loins, but two others also. Just sayin girl, she ain’t no lady!!As soon as you put her back with the boys she is goin to be shakin her tail .

  48. JeannieB says:

All mothers know that you can run, but you can’t hide!! They will find you anywhere!

  49. bonita says:

Great news about Sprite, but I wonder, do goats get ADHD? Dr. Pepper acts like a candidate. BTW, see what you mean about Nutmeg being too low to the ground to milk!

  50. Alyce Shane says:

    How awesome is that!!!

  51. TinaG says:

    Hurray for Sprite!!

  52. marymac says:

that was the cuttiest thing to watch, and horray for sprite. She just had mothers blues for a while, bless her little goat heart. Loved it!!

  53. catslady says:

    What wonderful chaos!!!

  54. ivy says:

Looks as though you’re gonna need a bigger goat pen…wow!

  55. Barbee' says:

I think Dr. Pepper is just deliriously happy to have playmates – the more the merrier – what an extrovert!

  56. Yvonne says:

So glad that sad story had a happy ending! I really felt so sorry for him. :woof:

  57. judyh says:

Suzanne, please give Sprite a hug and a kiss from me and tell her I’m very proud of her. You did a great job of teaching her!

  58. Window On The Prairie says:

Well great news, and less work for you. This sometimes happens with first time mama cows too. We pen them up together for several days until the cow figures it out.
    Suzanne

and the video is awesome Suzanne. I love watching all those babies. What are you going to do with all these goats? :bugeyed:

  67. Lana says:

I WANT GOATS!!! And donkeys…….and chickens! Do you suppose that the Homeowners Association in the “Over 55 Gated Community” in Phoenix where I live would let me have them??! I do have two very special dogs, though !!

  68. farmershae says:

Yay! What good news! I would have been afraid to be a mama to those wild ones too! What a good girl. You are making me want goats SO BAD!!

  69. Window On The Prairie says:

Oh my word. How can she stand to have that kid standing on her back with his pointy little hooves? That’s gotta hurt!
    Suzanne :bugeyed:

  70. Shelly Messier says:

They are so cute. I can’t believe she is now being a mother on her own, that is great! She must of been in pain or something after giving birth, now she is feeling better. Stay warm! :sun: :sun: :sun: :sun: :sun: :happyflower: :butterfly:

  71. AnnieB says:

Dr. Pepper is aptly named, because he’s really got pepper in his pants! :devil2: Well . . . if he had pants . . .

  72. badavis says:

I am so happy to see that Sprite decided to be a mom, I was so worried about her baby because he so wanted his mama. Happy wiggles to all.

  73. Runningtrails - Sheryl says:

  74. patchkat says:

Good for Sprite! She just needed a little time to adjust to her new status! I love how Dr. Pepper is riding Mom’s back…and she doesn’t seem to mind!

  75. Yvonne says:

She still doesn’t look so thrilled about nursing babies…I think the confinement of that small shed is why she gave in, but I’m soooo glad she did, whatever the reason! I do know one thing for sure, you took real good care of them during it all!

  76. susan says:

thank you soooo much for the video. the babys are just too cute. I’m so glad that Sprite came through in the end.
