This fruitcake is my own invention.  I have only ever met one person who did not love it.

KATHLEEN'S FRUIT CAKE

1 cup sugar

1 cup margarine

1 ½ cup hot water

1 cup raisins

¼ tsp salt

1 tsp ground cloves

1 tsp ground nutmeg

1 tsp ground cinnamon

2 cup all-purpose flour

1 tsp baking soda

Candied fruit and nuts to taste

In saucepan combine sugar, margarine, water, raisins, salt, cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon.

Bring to a boil and boil for 5 minutes.  Remove from heat and cool.

Sift flour with baking soda and stir into first mixture.

Turn into a greased and floured 8 inch square pan or 9×5×2 loaf pan.

Bake in preheated oven at 275 degrees for 1 hour to 1¼ hours or until cake tests done.

Remove from oven, cool in pan, then turn onto rack to cool completely.
