Always wondered what was in that stuff!  Sometimes I like, and sometimes I don't.  Bet this would be in the Like It category!

My Mom always made our Thousand Island dressing and we drizzled it over a wedge of iceberg lettuce. Ours is just the mayo, ketchup and sweet relish not measured, just mixed until it's what you want but now I like to add mustard seeds and very finely dice onion. I also make this for Reuben sandwiches YUM!

She also made our shrimp sauce and tartar sauce and I remember thinking it was weird when I first noticed all three of these in BOTTLES at the store Laugh.

I still much prefer the homemade!

Us too dede, all that was mixed as needed, and I still can't imagine buying any of it,  but I never liked the thousand island dressing mom made, (sorry mom!) it just seemed 'blah' so I never bought it or ate it in restaurants etc… I'll be trying this in verrrrry smallllll quantities, so I don't feel obligated to eat it if I still am uninspired by the result.  The Worcestershire sauce sounds like a very good idea to add some zip and take away some of the blahs, and onion and mustard seed too sound right!  Maybe I'll be a thousand island convert!

I would add some really spicy salsa and see if that does the trick Chef

Leah, use a salsa that is hotter than you want the dressing to be – the mayo is quite a buffer for the heat. Maybe stir in just a spoonful, taste, etc. Actually a hot picante sauce or taco sauce might work even better if you don't want big chunks of tomato in the dressing.

Maybe something like the "Fire" sauce from Taco Bell?  It has a good bit of heat in it and no chunks.  For the price of a bean burrito, you get lunch AND some extra sauce for making salad dressing!    Wink

Jalapeño powder!  That's what I'd try!  A tiny bit adds brightness and interest, more adds heat.

Another thing I've learned to do is to add a little dry mustard to creamy dressings… something I make for salmon that we love is, (and I'm guestimating quantities here)

1/4 c mayo

1/4 c sour cream

dried or fresh dill to taste (we like a lot)

1/2 t dry mustard

mix up several hours early so the dry mustard has a chance to develope… start slow with the dry mustard, it developes in flavor so don't taste it as you mix it and add more without waiting a bit.

It really adds depth to a creamy recipe like this.

Mustard also adds great flavor to a cheese sauce. Not detectable as a mustard flavor, but makes a whopping difference.

Oh my here we go wandering off topic again LOLOL!

Pete – good idea on the Taco Bell sauce. We always ask for extra to keep on hand LOL.

So maybe somebody should copy that salmon sauce over to it's own topic?  Sounds like a keeper!

A few recipes I found online used chipotle powder……it's a smoked jalapeno powder.  That would give the hot, smoky flavor!
