Hello!  I got a message from Suzanne through Georgia that everyone was interested in possibly making an apron like our Granny Ruby's that Suzanne featured on CITR the other day.  Well I have taken the measurements and I will try to post some understandable directions here:

These aprons are made out of cotton or poly/cotton blends in any print/color/pattern of your choice.  The front of the apron is made with the beginnings of straps starting toward the shoulder, the neckline cut out and the armholes tapering off to the back.  The lower hem is also cut along a curve at the back edges.  I would recommend folding your fabric in half to create your apron front.  The following measurements are the FINISHED lengths, allow extra fabric (about 1/2 inch for the seam allowances and hems):

Width of apron                                              34 inches

Neck to hem (lowest point of neck line)          34 inches

Shoulder seam to hem                                   41.5 inches

Arm pit to hem                                               29 inches

Shoulder straps                                               20 inches

Strap across back                                           6.25 inches

Ties                                                                15.5 inches

All straps/ties are 3 inches wide

Don't forget to add pocket(s) of your size and configuration of choice.

The seams at the shoulders were flat-felled to make a nice finish. The back strap was just attached underneath the shoulder strap.   All the edges are finished by turning under 1/4 inch, pressing, and then turning another 1/4 inch, pressing and stitching to hem.  The attachment end of the tie is lightly gathered before sewing onto the apron body.

*See the photos that Suzanne posted to visualize the finished product.

I hope this helps.  I have never tried to write a sewing pattern before but I am confident that you crafty people can do it!

Yes, Pete, that is a nice pattern.  The back detail on this pattern picture is perfect.  Now, Granny Ruby's aprons don't have the bodice separate from the "skirt" of the apron.  Her apron is just one piece straight down.

If you are like me and no longer have much of a waistline, the "straight down" type might be more flatttering.  Pink Pig  Especially if the fabric has thin, horizontal stripes! LOL  Laugh

Thanks,

Cousin Sheryl

I need to sew a Ruby apron.  SHERYL, WILL YOU HELP ME?  You know I can't do it by myself, LOL.

Sheryl, just thought the verbage might be easier for you from an existing pattern.  You know, simpler to alter what is already written than starting with a clean sheet of paper…

Yes, Pete, I hadn't thought of that!  I will look at it sometime and then revise my instructions.

Yes, Suzanne, I will help you make one (A.T.P. – you KNOW what that means).  When Suzanne and I make a lovely apron, then I can also have a better understanding of how to write the pattern instructions (as well as cutting out an actual pattern).

Have a great day, everybody!  Happy Butterfly

Has anyone made an apron from the measurements yet?

I would love to see pictures!

I've been searching for a pattern and was tickled when I stumbled upon this post – I have the measurements sketched out on some brown package paper but haven't had the chance to do anything more.

Stacy Lynn,  you are ahead of Suzanne and I if you have it sketched out on paper.   My little joke so Suzanne above was, "Just wait 'til A.T.P."  That meant "After the Party!"  If you will note on CITR today, Suzanne posted a lovely pictorial of our Annual Party.  The last 2 months of my life have consisted of spring cleaning, sorting, stashing, cooking, son graduating and all the other million-and-one-things leading up to our Annual Party.

Now, I may have time to sew a little plus Suzanne and I are going to take a "road trip" sometime to the Lehmann's store in Ohio.  (hehehe – that will be fun,  Cousin Mark and 52 will have to watch out)

Keep checking back, we'll get around to sewing sometime soon.

yes

PS – I have bought some fabric though.  chicken

If you don't happen to have enough fabric already for one of these aprons, here's a lovely new collection called "Canning Day"  which would certainly be appropriate!  http://www.connectingthreads.c….._L116.html

I'll have to check out that Annual Party Post!

Love that fabric. I just ordered this apron pattern – http://www.sewthankful.com/Sca…..ttern.html and that fabric would absolutely be lovely for this pattern.

I made something very similar to this pattern.

But started with a square..and than added strips like a log cabin pattern, but only on 2 sides instead of 4.

Not hard to make at all…it looks exactly like this one.

The "log cabin" apron pattern looks great!  A way to use up leftover fabric! Thanks for the info.

All this talk of apron's reminds me of my mother and her aprons. Wish I knew what happend to them all.?Also wonder what happened to her hankerchiefs. Today everyone grabs a tissue instead of a handkerchief.

I can see her now pushing her's up under the end of her sleeve or  tucking it in the edge of her slacks .

Awwwwwww………….the memories this site brings…..aprons, handkerchiefs, wrigner washing machine…clotheslines, chickens, canning and the list goes on.

Thanks everyone!butterfly

I love aprons. They remind me of my great grandmother who passed away when I was 10. I don't have alot of memories of her but I do remember her always wearing an apron when ever we went to visit her. They were the full apron with the criss-crossed back. Thanks for bringing back achildhood memory.

I find wearing an apron pretty handy.  I've always got something handy to wipe my hands on, use as a pot holder, or wipe an unexpected spill.  It seems quicker than trying to find a kitchen towel.  But, no, I didn't make them.  I got them when I took some cooking classes.

My best friend's grandma always wore an apron too. She lived not too far away from us so we used to walk over there. She would fix her and Grandpa's big meal at noon and the whole house smelled so good.  She kept her change purse in her cleavage, which was quite ample, wrapped in a handerchief too. My friend and I would go over there so she could get Grandma to give her some money for the ice cream man. We also used to walk to the drugstore for cherry cokes at the fountain. Those were the days my firends.wave
