On another forum that I frequent, one of the ladies said she was making her grandmothers pie crust but she never did a good job. Then came a long discussion about "how to" and a discussion of all the mothers and grandmothers recipes. Everyone was totally amazed that their Grandmothers all used the exact same recipe for the "perfect" pie crust. I found it very amusing because my Mother and I have also used that recipe and I know for a fact…It came from the early Better Homes and Gardens cookbooks…
So from now on, they can call it their Grandmothers but I think I spoiled it for them telling them where it came from…maybe I shouldn't have but I thought it was very funny….I mean let's face it….most every early kitchen had a BH&G cookbook…

And it is STILL a very good cookbook! Especially if you have an earlier version of it. I refer to mine from 40 years ago frequently.

I have the version printed in 1944. LOL
The book my mother used more than that though is the "Culinary Arts Institute encyclopedic Cookbook". There are all kinds of notes in her hand in the margines and all kinds of slips inserted between pages with more notes, or just scraps to mark pages. I've left them all were they were so whenever I use it I feel like she's standing at my elbow while I cook or bake.

If tomatoes are a fruit, then isn’t ketchup technically a
smoothie?

But the BH&G got the recipe from somebody's grandma…..

By the way, the BH&G (at least the couple of versions that I have) does NOT include vinegar and egg in the pie crust recipe. I tried numerous times over the years to make good pie crust with that recipe and just never could do it. The recipe I use now (and that's on my site) literally came from the church ladies here in our little town. Where they got it, I don't know, but where it differs from the BH&G is the vinegar and egg. Oh, and sugar, I don't think the BH&G has sugar either. But I think it is vinegar and egg that makes the consistency difference. (Though I'm sure the sugar makes it taste better, too.)
I really thought I was just a pie crust dolt until I tried this recipe with the vinegar and egg. It takes someone better than me to make the BH&G one come out right!

I am so grateful for your "church ladies" recipe. I have attempted somewhat unsuccessfully the pie crust recipe my mother and grandmother could make perfectly, I have my grandmother's old BH&G cook book. I tried your pie crust recipe tonight and it came out perfect. I now no longer fear making pie crust. I will be enjoying some pumpkin pie before bed tonight. Sandra
