Wow, this is an old thread, Cat!  Haven't figured them out yet?

I was wondering….if a fresh bacon (that's probably what your grandmother would have had) would give the pink color when baked down with the white beans and sugar.  I've never made beans without molasses, so I don't know if the bacon gives off a color.

I used pinto beans in a batch the other day and they had a pink cast before the molassas was added.

Ross, I was wondering can you use pinto beans to make baked beans? I always use the small navy beans, I have a large supply of pinto beans and would like to use them up, let me know how yours turned out, I am thinking of all the ways that I can use them up.  Thanks

The baked beans with pintos was completely fine. I have used red kidney beans, navy beans, 15 bean soup mix beans. They all come out a little different but very fine. I remember seeing a pot of baked beans someone brought to a church picnic make with large lima beans and no molassas. I like my baked beans with molassas.
