So this year we added to the farm 8 turkeys. They are only two weeks old right now. We bought them for $5.00 a piece. That is the going rate in Maine at the farm and garden store. We have some people interested in purchasing some from us for Thanksgiving. I believe it cost to process them is about $4.00 ea or so. What do you think would be a fair amount to charge per bird? I know prices vary greatly from different parts of the country. I am just looking for ballpark. Thank you for your help.

Heritage turkeys sell for around 6-8 dollars per pound dressed weight in Maryland.

All the effort they take, time, feed, hauling water, watching over them is worth a LOT!  Do charge for all that!  You are worth it, and so are they.

I would call around some other farms and butcher shops that supply such things and see what they charge, review your feed costs and go from there.

Thank you for responding. You validated what I thought. Anyone can get a on sale supermarket turkey for cheap, but it is nothing like a fresh off the farm bird. Raising animals takes a lot of time and energy, and we should be compensated for it.

Imagine how much you could save if you already are set up for ducks, etc. if you raised your own turkey. I am a wuss. I can't imagine eating a bird I raise. We have ducks and if they end up being drakes I'll have to start over but I'll still have the drakes. I can't even imagine selling them for someone to eat. I like to pretend my food never had a face.

Cassie…

I do own a pair of Pekin ducks. A month ago I incubated 7 of their eggs. All 7 were fertile and hatched. We sold them to different people that are going to keep them as pets and for eggs (if they were lucky enough to have females).

I know what you mean about eating them, but I want to know where my families food comes from and this is one way that I can.
