Hello! My name is Crystal. I am 28, married with a 4-year old son and a baby on the way in September. I work for a large corporation as an accountant by day, and I am a wife, mother and homemaker by night. We live in rural south-central PA. I was raised in the country and was always helping out my grandparents on their farm. I am truly a country girl at heart. When I got married, we moved from the country into the suburbs of a city. In January, we bought a new house with a half acre of land (not much, but enough for us!) and only 1 neighbor. We love it there and I am much happier! I can't wait to get outside and start planting my flowers. I'm even going to try my hand at a small garden this year!

HI, My name is Karen , I live in Tennessee, at least the part that didnt get plowed over by  a tornado. I recently bought six chicks. They are currently living on a large plastic tub in my bathroom. They will be six weeks old sometime in the next two weeks. At least all but one will be, she the runt, and my personal favorite. They have their wing feathers and some of their tail feathers. I am so ready for them to be outside, they are getting toooo big for their brooder box. I was hoping someone could tell me if I can put them outside in their new coop my husband and I built for them. Oh and before anyone worries, I have paper under the wood shavings and grit in the tub, I didnt want them to get spradle legged on me. It was the only thing I could find big enough to house them and still fit in the bathroom. I would welcome any advice. Im hopin to get fresh eggs from my chickies.

Thanks,

Karen

Hi everyone! My name is Deborah I live in Tasmania on 20 acres with 3 boys and a very accomodating hubby!  Our youngest son has Autism it was him who really led us to follow our dreams, in the process we have been living an unbelivable life.  Our parents had given us the skills we just needed to follow our gut feelings…….. and lo and behold we are well on the way to semi- selfsufficency!  We make many things at home, including music, like cakes that don't turn out quite right they are devoured with gusto anyway.  Very much looking forward to meeting all of you.  Suzanne its great to share the journey!Sun2

Hi! I'm joni in ks, 41, 5 kids, used to live in the country with chickens, a dog, and five acres. Due to a drastic change in circumstances, I'm currently a nursing student in the city, hoping for some free time during summer break to bake again.

To that end, I have a question. There are several recipes I'd like to print out (with pics) to have in the kitchen, but I don't know the permission parameters for that. I'm sure this information is here somewhere and I just haven't found it yet? Is there a cd or book for purchase? I'm itching to try the recipes for pie crust, bread, pizza dough, kahlua…so many! :)

Thanks!

Hi, I'm Taryn, I hope this is the right way to jump in, couldn't find a spot to introduce myself except by replying to a post.

I am a 46 year old Police Officer in California, and I work dayshift, so I usually look in here later in the evenings.  I have two daughters, 11 and 7, and it is just us, because their daddy died three years ago.  We do have a sort-of farm of 8 mostly steep and wooded acres, with three Friesian mares (and a foal due in May), one Friesian gelding, and one grumpy Morgan gelding who thinks he is a mare.  He is my Mounted Police horse, and despite his cranky attitude, he is an outstanding Police horse.  We have two Nubian goats, and I am just learning milking/pastuerizing/etc, so my next step is cheese!  We have 8 laying hens and 5 new chickies of various young ages, and of course wonderful dogs and cats.   We USED to have wolves, parrots, ferrets, snakes, and lizards, too, but this became too much to deal with alone.

I have been reading this site on the recommendation of a friend for several months; it is the only blog I visit.  I love the recipes and stories.  My girls and I love the bread – we don't buy it anymore, we make it, and the pop tarts went over really well, too.  I haven't had time to try much else yet.

Thank you for such an enjoyable blog.  It is funny, charming, informative, and sweet.  After a day at work, it is nice to be reminded that there are normal, kind people in the world.

It has been exciting reading about so many of you. I first discovered Suzanne's blog by listening to WVPR (West Virginia Public Radio). I have checked in every day since. I just love reading her blog.

My name is Beverly (42) and I am a wife (husband Ken), mother (Stephen 6 years old), and a nurse (11 years with the Veterans Administration).

We live in Fairmont WV, and my husband is thankful we do not live in the country. I already have 3 dogs and an aquarium. If I had land or a larger place I would have all kinds of animals! Smiley PuppySmiley PuppySmiley Puppy

I am Dreama.  Life long primitive country crafter and decorator.  Work outside my home.  Run own business with website and remote site sales and shows.  Inspired by mother and grandmothers (90 & 91).  Helped by sister, children and friends.  Astonished by grandchildren.  Yes, both my grandmothers are great-great-grandmothers.  Live simple and frugal lifestyle.  No TV!  Installed telephone and internet at home in 2009.  Too busy for frills, anyway.  Looking forward to sharing and relaxing with you all.

Guess I will introduce myself…My name is Dana, but it seems that all my friends call me Dana Lou (real name). I have tried to discourage that over the years but with no luck. I have a twin sister and her hame is Lana (Lay-na) Sue……but she only goes by Lana….(adamantly!!).
I live in a small town on the Ohio River just north of Parkersburg, WV. I have 2 great sons that live near me. Both of my parents were from Roane County, WV (near Suzanne) and I have lots and lots of cousins and aunts and uncles that still live in Harmony and Walton.  I spent a lot of time there growing up!!
I love music ( I can't sing or play “anything”), but my “boyfriend” Mike sings (beautifully) and plays several instruments. He plays in a local classic rock band. I am his “groupie”!!!!
My greatest love though is sewing. I have been sewing for many years and have made many, many dolls….Primitive's are my favorite. I love to tea dye them to make them look old. I also do “grungy” tags.
My newest project though is “baby bibs”. My granddaughter was born 7 months ago and I didn't like a lot of the bibs that I saw….so I designed some of my own and it is sort of growing…right now I have an order for Pittsburgh Steeler bibs…I think home sewing is a dying art (and cooking) and I have been thinking about giving sewing lessons from my home…they don't even teach home-ec in the schools here anymore.
Suzanne is a great inspiration to everyone to jump right in and get back to the basics. I love her recipes and have a whole notebook full of them now!!! I would love to live on a farm and raise alpaacas…maybe someday because I am only 49 (and 1/2) . Happy Flower

Hey yall! I just found this site, and I'm starting to become addicted!

My name is Stephanie, and I live on a farm in Snead, AL with my husband Lance. We are in our mid-twenties and have been married for almost 3 years. We farm 500 acres of cotton and 100 acres of corn and peanuts. We also have 4 broiler houses, which hold 133,000 chickens!  My job on the farm is mostly the chicken houses, but I also help in the field when needed, mainly during cotton picking season! I do all the book work for the farm, and I'm also chief grass cutter and weed sprayer.  We are in the process of trying to build a house, but it has rained so much lately, the land has been ready for 3 weeks and our builder can't even get in there.  The rain is also keeping us out of the fields, and we haven't been able to plant a thing except some corn, which was washed away! We only have until the end of May to plant, then we're in trouble! Anyways, I look forward to getting to know everybody!Chicken

Hello!  My name is Darla and I live in Kentucky with my husband, our 2 boys, 1 cat (plus a few stray that hang out in the barn), 2 dogs, 2 goats (babies due in August), 4 grown guineas, 6 new baby guineas, 14 grown chickens, 5 young chicks and 19 new babies hatched during the night.  Of course we are the proud owners of multiple frogs and turtles at least once or twice a week around here. We lived in town until a couple of years ago when we found this house and 20 acres for sale and it just happened to be about a mile and a half from my mom and dad's farm where I grew up.  We will never regret our move from town.  The boys are loving it out here.  You can read about their adventures on my blog.

I have been reading and enjoying Suzanne's blog for awhile now and had never checked out the forum.  My first thought when I started reading in here was “yay!! people like me!”

I am looking forward to meeting all of you and your farm critters!

=============

Hi all! My name is Dede and I live and work in Harrison County WV. My maternal roots and deceased forebears are in Roane County WV so when I found Chickens in the Road I felt an immediate connection lol.

I am an avid (read obsessed lol) home canner – I can year round and put up at least 400 jars a year even though I work full time and do some volunteering – it can be done! I am also co-owner of a great canning group on Yahoo and I have lots of info and I love to share and learn.

First off, I have a recipe/method for Italian Peppers in Tomato Sauce (think Oliverio's style …) and am glad to share. I'll put it in Just Recipes this evening.

Thanks for having me – I've been lurking for a while Wave

Hi Everyone!

I am really enjoying this site and all the friendly "faces".  My husband of 40+ years and I have always loved growing our own veggies organically and now we are able to buy farm fresh eggs and milk. We are both from large families with lots of cousins and aunts and uncles growing up in the western part of WV.  We now live in southern WV close (not quite close enough with gasoline prices) to our 20 (so far) grandchildren and their parents.  We love family and friends and treasure our time with them.  We've lived in Southern Africa and the Caribbean for 15+ years and are so glad to be home in WV again.  I have been looking at all the nooks and crannies of this website for a few days now and realize it's going to take me a few YEARS to see it all.  Looking forward to getting to know all of you better.  Thanks for the site Suzanne…it is great!

Hello folks, I should really introduce myself and just found "Introduce yourself" forum on this visit. I have been viewing the site for about ten days now and come to it first thing in the morning with coffee in hand to see what Suzanne is talking about. I'm a country boy that has grown up within a mile of where I was born. I live on Tyler Mountain here in Wild and Wonderful.

I'm a flyfisherman, turkey hunter, bird dog aficionado who was lucky enough to marry a city girl that loves the outdoors and country living also. We have a great raised bed garden that keeps us busy on our piece of paradise. We have raised pigs, cows, puppies (we will have a new Brittany from Kentucky in about 10 weeks we hope), a horse, quail, and turkeys. I love to hear about each of your experiences, so I will be haunting the forums to read about your life experiences. God bless.
